Chicago Bears make special teams change after Week 2 miscues

Chicago Bears Scott Daly

While the Minnesota Vikings eventually won 9-3, the Chicago Bears trailed by just a field goal for most of their Week 2 matchup. They had an opportunity to tie things up with just over six minutes remaining, but Minnesota managed to block Chicago’s 23-yard field goal attempt.

Head coach Ben Johnson wasn’t happy at all with how things went down. He immediately called out the botched field goal after the loss, via Zack Pearson of Bear Report.

“The operation was not clean,” Johnson said. “The snap was not good. The first field goal was a warning shot as far as I’m concerned.”

Tight end Sam Roush is drawing plenty of flack, as he’s who the Vikings beat to block the king. But rookie long snapper Beau Gardner drew the ire of the coaching staff as well. His snap played a direct role in the blocked kick. Furthermore, a high snap on Cairo Santos’ previous 50-yard make could’ve spelled disaster.

The Bears have now decided to make a change. Gardner’s status in Chicago didn’t last long.

The Bears have signed fellow long snapper Scott Daly off of the New Orleans Saints practice squad, the team announced. In turn, Gardner has been waived.

Daly was with the Bears in both 2024 and 2025. He is well aware of the organization’s standards and what Johnson brings to the table. Furthermore, he has 77 games of NFL experience. After testing out another option, it’s clear the Bears preferred what they already had.

Coming off of their Week 2 loss, the Bears have plenty of questions to answer. They have addressed one of them on special teams by bringing back Daly.
