Chicago Bears surprise contributor could be next Nahshon Wright

Ryan Poles, Chicago Bears

While it only lasted one season, Nahshon Wright broke onto the scene with the Chicago Bears. His 11 pass break ups and five interceptions earned him a Pro Bowl nod. Now, the Bears are trying to find their next defensive diamond in the rough.

Chicago decided against massively upgrading their defensive line throughout the offseason. In fact, the franchise traded away Gervon Dexter because they’re so confident in what they have. At pass rush, Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo remain the projected starters while Austin Booker should mix in regularly.

Still, the Bears know they need to be much more disruptive in the opponent’s backfield. If they struggle too bring pressure, it’ll be too easy for opposing offenses. It may also force Chicago to look for help outside of their organization.

That is of course unless the Bears’ pass rushers step up to the plate as the franchise is expecting. One clear example comes in the form of Jamree Kromah.

Chicago Bears give Jamree Kromah major opportunity

Based on their current pass rush situation, Kromah’s name may be called more often than expected. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune wouldn’t be surprised if Kromah turns into a surprise contributor.

“What about defensive end Jamree Kromah, who had to have been one of the final players to make the 53-man roster? Kromah had three sacks in the preseason, and if he could get five or six in the regular season, that would be a heck of a development for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen,” Biggs wrote.

Biggs isn’t directly saying that Kromah will be the next Wright. This close to the season, he’s trying to pick a surprise that hasn’t been shouted from the rooftops. Still, the Bears kept Kromah because they believe in his fit with Dennis Allen’s defensive scheme. He caught all of Chicago’s attention with a pair of sacks in the preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.

Kromah will still be at the bottom of the pass rush pecking order and will need to fight for every opportunity. But if he is on the field, it’ll be because the Bears are impressed with his play.
