Chicago Cubs top prospect on scorching path to MLB
The Chicago Cubs selected infielder/outfielder Josiah Hartshorn in the sixth-round of the 2025 MLB Draft. And in short order, he has already become the best prospect in the organization.
The Cubs are now promoting Hartshorn to Double-A, via Chase Ford of MiLB Central. He is in the midst of a historic rise, via Greg Huss of Cubs on Deck, h/t Brett Taylor of BeacherNation.
“According to my research, he is the first Cubs high school draftee to reach Double-A in his first full professional season since Dyain Frazier in 1970, Huss wrote.
Still just 19-years-old, Hartshorn still has a long journey to the major leagues. This is still his first professional season. But if this is what the first baseman/outfielder’s debut looks like, the Cubs are salivating over his future.
Now, Chicago will see how he stacks up against Double-A competition. If it looks anything like his first 122 games, Hartshorn will only continue to soar through the minor leagues.

As it stands, Hartshorn ranks as the top prospect in Chicago’s organization and the 39th-best in all of baseball, via MLB Pipeline. Needless to say, the Cubs are looking for him to play a vital role in their future.
Over those 122 games, Hartshorn hit .289 with 23 home runs, 110 home runs and 16 stolen bases. His power stroke is clear and has put him on the map. If he is able to put up the same performance against Double-A pitching, his status as a top prospect would only be solidified further.
For now, the Cubs are focused on clinching their spot in the postseason. But eventually, they will need to take a hard look at their future. Chicago will at least remain confident knowing Hartshorn’s bat is in the pipeline.
