Jets Injury Report: Minkah Fitzpatrick, Omar Cooper Jr. Remain Sidelined
The Jets injury report continues to have a few big names on it as the team prepares for its Week 2 matchup against the Green Bay Packers. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr., running back Kene Nwangwu, and edge rusher Joseph Ossai all missed practice again on Thursday. That makes two consecutive DNPs for all four players.
Head coach Aaron Glenn addressed the injuries during his Wednesday press conference, describing the four players as week-to-week.
“When it comes to the injuries, we have four guys that won’t be practicing today, and these guys are basically week-to-week. It’s Kene, Omar, Joseph Ossai, who I’m really impressed with how he’s been moving around, so he’s getting really, really close, and also Minkah.”
Glenn added that none of the injured players are currently considered candidates for injured reserve.
Jets Could Be Without Minkah Fitzpatrick
Fitzpatrick’s groin injury is arguably the biggest concern on the list. The veteran safety has missed both practices this week, and Glenn discussed how the Jets would replace him if he’s unable to play against Green Bay. He pointed specifically to Andre Cisco and Dane Belton as players capable of taking on larger roles.
“Cisco’s played a lot of football in this league and he’s been a damn good player in this league. Dane, as we talked about on Monday, how impressed I was that he can come in and he can play basically the same role that Minkah had of being able to play the big nickel, playing safety.”
Glenn also emphasized that replacing a player like Fitzpatrick isn’t necessarily the responsibility of one player.
Some Positive Movement on Jets Injury Report
There was better news further down Thursday’s injury report. Cornerback D’Angelo Ponds and linebacker Jamien Sherwood were upgraded from limited participants on Wednesday to full participants Thursday. Cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr., who is dealing with a shoulder injury, was a full participant for the second consecutive day.
Will McDonald IV was also limited Thursday with an ankle injury after not appearing on Wednesday’s report. Defensive lineman David Onyemata returned as a full participant after receiving a veteran rest day Wednesday.
The Jets will practice again Friday, when the final injury report and game designations should provide a much clearer picture of who will be available against the Packers.
