Offensive coordinator reveals how Bears will attack Panthers defense

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for a fierce Week 1 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. Offensive coordinator Press Taylor is locked in on preparations.

His biggest goal is figuring out Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero’s “DNA.” Taylor and company want to know everything they can about how Carolina runs their scheme. No stone will be left unturned entering Week 1, via Phil Thompson of the Chicago Tribune.

“We’re trying to build his call sheet, so you’re studying the tape and you’re trying to dive into where are his yard breaks, what are his third-down sections, what are his red-zone sections, where does he pressure, when does he pressure, what do they like to do, what are their adjustments?” Taylor said. “So just trying to figure out who this guy is, what his DNA is, what his response to certain looks is going to be.”

“The chess match of trying to figure out who you’re playing first is probably the most exciting part of Mondays,” he concluded.

Head coach Ben Johnson calls his own plays on offense. But Taylor will play a key role in game planning on a weekly basis. His focus remains on helping the Bears succeed in 2026. At the same time, Taylor clearly saw what operating under Johnson did for new Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle.

As he begins his tenure as Chicago OC, Taylor would make a strong impression if the Bears’ offense succeeds vs. the Panthers.

The Panthers finished their 2025 campaign ranked 16th in total defense, allowing 327.2 yards per game. They struggled against the run, dropping to 20th, allowing 123.3 yards per game. However, it was a massive improvement for a Carolina team that finished last in total defense in 2024, 404.5 YPG.

Over the offseason, the Panthers added linebackers Jaelan Phillips, Bobby Okereke and Devin Lloyd. All three will be expected to help Carolina’s defense take another step forward.

While the Bears may not have tape on them playing for Evero, Taylor and company will be well aware of the new additions. Overall, Chicago wants to be prepared as possible entering Week 1.
