Three reasons Chicago Cubs Game 1 loss to Padres stings extra

Chicago Cubs, Cubs News, Cubs vs Padres

The Chicago Cubs start to the 2026 post season is not off to a good start. In Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series they were shut out by the San Diego Padres in a crushing 8-0 defeat. San Diego came out swinging in this contest, with two of their first three batters hitting home runs off Matthew Boyd, with the southpaw ultimately giving up three long balls overall.

Furthermore, the loss stings beyond the final score, as the Cubs now face elimination and must win the next two games in a row to advance to the NLDS. With their season hanging in the balance, here are three reasons why the Game 1 defeat hurts even more.

1) Second consecutive post season being shut out by the Padres

In 2025, the Cubs dropped Game 2 of the NLWC against the Padres, 3-0, forcing a decisive Game 3. Being shut out by the same team in consecutive postseasons is tough enough, but suffering a blowout in Game 1 this time around makes the situation even more painful.

2) Padres preserved their elite bullpen arms

Building off the previous point, San Diego needed just three pitchers to get through Game 1. Michael King went seven innings, Yuki Matsui followed with a scoreless eighth, and Joe Musgrove closed things out in his return to an MLB mound after two years away. That’s significant for the Cubs, as the Padres’ elite bullpen remains fresh heading into Game 2, and potentially for Game 3 if needed.

3) Cubs offense sputtered

The Cubs entered the postseason as MLB’s highest-scoring offense in 2026, making their Game 1 performance even more difficult to swallow. During the regular season, Chicago averaged nine runs and hit more than three home runs per game across six matchups against the Padres, yet the lineup was completely shut down in the opener. The Cubs failed to score a run, did not record an extra-base hit, or generate much of any offensive momentum, going just 3-for-31, with two hits coming off Musgrove, and striking out 11 times in total.
