Chicago Bears: Caleb Williams threw Ben Johnson under the bus for mistake

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears got a little too cute during their “Thursday Night Football” game against the New England Patriots, opting for a trick play inside the red zone where Caleb Williams handed the ball off to offensive lineman Joe Thuney.

Flag.

The officials penalized the Bears for the play for an illegal forward handoff, a five-yard penalty, which knocked them from the New England 8-yard line to 2nd & 8 from the 13-yard line. Chicago would eventually settle for a field goal on the drive.

When speaking during the postgame broadcast on Prime TV, Williams said he was unaware that it was illegal to hand the ball off forward, which shifted the blame to the designer of the trick play, Bears head coach Ben Johnson.

Williams said the Bears would go back and look at what happened and try to come up with a different way to execute the play.

During his postgame news conference on Thursday night, Johnson said he’d have to look at the tape of the play, as he thought it looked pretty near what it did in practice.

After reviewing the tape, Johnson told reporters on Friday that he didn’t have any regrets on the penalized play and that sometimes shooters miss.

“It’s one of those things— shooters shoot. We shot and we missed,” Johnson said, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.

The mistake hurt the Bears’ chances of converting a touchdown on the drive, but it wasn’t the play that put Chicago in the most jeopardy to lose the game. The Bears’ defense collapsed at the end of the second quarter, allowing the Patriots to steal a touchdown at the end of the first half.

Williams took a bad sack in the fourth quarter, which he admitted after the game was a mistake that would lead to a long and serious conversation with Johnson. Williams and the Bears were fortunate Cairo Santos had the kick of his life, nailing an attempt from 58 yards as Chicago escaped the night with a 30-24 win.
