Chicago Bears coach sees Jaylon Johnson glimmer of hope despite struggles
Cornerback Jaylon Johnson hasn’t had the start to 2026 that he or the Chicago Bears were hoping for. Entering Week 6, his 42.3 grade from Pro Football Focus ranks 96/104 cornerbacks.
The Bears’ 31-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 5 exposed plenty of Johnson’s struggles. He personally allowed 106 yards passing. Chicago as a whole gave up four passes of 40+ yards.
While he is coming off of a groin injury that limited him to seven games in 2025, the Bears are counting on Johnson to lead their cornerback room. Their best options outside beyond him are the oft-injury Tyrique Stevenson and rookie Malik Muhammad.
Johnson has yet to live up to that hype in 2026. But as a former two-time Pro Bowler, the Bears aren’t counting him out just yet.
Chicago Bears’ Jaylon Johnson gets Al Harris endorsement

One of the biggest problems Johnson is facing is that opposing quarterbacks aren’t afraid to throw at him. The cornerback is on pace to be targeted 78 times, which would mark his highest total since he was a rookie, via Kevin Fishbain of the Athletic.
Defensive backs coach/defensive pass game coordinator Al Harris is putting a different spin on the metric. If teams are going to continue targeting Johnson, the cornerback must be prepared to make quarterbacks pay.
“Well, my thing is, you can’t intercept the ball if you’re not getting the opportunities,” Harris said. “So if they’re throwing the ball at you, they’re allowing you opportunities to get the ball. And I think Jaylon has done a great job of just relishing the challenge.”
But Johnson won’t suddenly revert to his Pro Bowl self overnight. Harris is aware of the hard work it’ll take for the cornerback to be feared once more. But at the very least, the secondary coach has diagnosed what must be fixed.
“You can’t be afraid of double moves,” he said. “Every team’s gonna run double moves, so whether it’s a double move or a triple move, whatever the case may be, you can’t be afraid of it, and I don’t think he is. But, hey, your eyes will always keep you where you need to be.”
Johnson will have an opportunity to get back on track against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6. If he continues to struggle, the Bears will need to have a serious look at their quarterback room.
