Chicago Bears’ Joe Thuney still setting personal history in Year 11
At this stage of his 11-year NFL, Chicago Bears guard Joe Thuney doesn’t have much left to prove. He is a four-time Super Bowl champion and Pro Bowler as well as a three-time First-team All-Pro. His first year with the Bears saw Thuney win the inaugural NFL Protector of the Year award.
When Ben Johnson was hired as head coach, fixing the offensive line was amongst his biggest priorities. Acquiring Thuney in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs created a domino effect. Now, he remains a clear leader and captain of the Bears. His work at left guard is irreplaceable.
As Chicago tries to go on a deep playoff run, they’re relying on Thuney to continue dominating on the left side. But throughout his career, the lineman has proven he can be versatile.
Week 3’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles gave Thuney a chance to move around the formation, he managed to set some new personal history in the process.

As the Bears tried to score in the red zone, Johnson had Thuney line up at right guard. He has now played all five offensive line positions during the regular season, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. And while he isn’t 100 percent positive, Thuney believes he checked all the boxes on special teams as well, playing wing on the field goal unit as well.
“It might be a first,” he said. “It might be my last position to play on field goal. I think I’ve played ’em all.”
Thuney was on the field goal unit due to struggles from rookie tight end Sam Roush. It’s a testament to the guards versatility and willingness to fill any role asked of him.
Ultimately, the Bears will hope Thuney doesn’t have to change positions too much. But his 11 years in the league have proven he is more than capable.
