Indiana Fever center Aliyah Boston (7) warms up

Aliyah Boston and the Indiana Fever saw their season end not the way they wanted to. They pushed the Las Vegas Aces to a winner-take-all Game 3 last Thursday but failed to dethrone the defending champions. The 24-year-old spoke about the lessons she and her teammates learned following their elimination.

Boston enjoyed a strong campaign, earning her fourth All-Star selection. She was also named to the Team USA squad that competed at the FIBA World Championship. The South Carolina Gamecocks product recorded 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the deciding game. However, her efforts weren’t enough to avoid a 94-83 defeat.

Kelsey Mitchell led the way for Indiana with a team-high 23 points and two rebounds. She struggled from the field, converting just 7-of-23 attempts. Caitlin Clark was also inefficient with her shot, finishing with 18 points on 6-of-18 shooting, along with four rebounds and three three-pointers.

Aliyah Boston opens up on what the Fever learned after season-ending loss

Boston highlighted that winning more regular-season games is important. Indiana faced Las Vegas with homecourt disadvantage after only clinching the No. 6 seed with a 28-16 record.

“One, win more games during the regular season so you can start at home,” Boston said. “Number two, I mean, Game 1, I feel like it was combating those runs. It was a conversation for us all season is sometimes we go too long with some empty possessions and even if the other team, like (the) Aces squad, they can score.  We have to be better at capitalizing at those and I just didn’t feel like we did.”

Boston and Clark will likely remain with the Fever. However, Mitchell is set for unrestricted free agency and will generate a lot of interest from teams around the WNBA. If she re-signs with Indiana, its three-headed monster will be intact. The front office needs to surround them with more talent to put the franchise in the best position to win a title.
