Three Jets Who Deserve Praise In Week 5 Win Against The Browns

Braelon Allen Braelon Allen Braelon Allen

Following the New York Jets Week 1 victory against the Tennessee Titans, the Jets lost the next three games. Now, they hoped to get back in the win column against a very beatable Deshaun Watson-led Cleveland Brown’s team. While the Jets have gotten off to a rather lackluster start, their Week 5 contest against Cleveland looked to be a momentum-building win, and that’s exactly what it was. After getting torched by the Chicago Bears last week, the Jets knocked off the Browns, 17-12.

This may have been one of the Jets’ best offensive games early in the season. Geno Smith connected on 17 of his 30 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown in the process. Braelon Allen got the start at running back with Breece Hall dealing with an injury. Allen played the best game of his young career, rushing for 116 yards on 24 carries and scoring a touchdown. Garrett Wilson topped the century mark and had a touchdown to his credit. The defense bent but never broke, shutting down Watson with one player making history. So, which three Jets players deserve praise for this Week 5 win?

Offense: Braelon Allen, RB

Last week, Braelon Allen was thrust into lead running back duties thanks to an injury to usual starter Breece Hall. The game against Chicago got out of hand quickly, and Allen was unable to showcase what he’s capable of as the featured piece of the running game. That was not the case in Week 5. The New York Jets’ passing game, when not targeting Garrett Wilson, was completely pathetic in their Week 5 duel against the Cleveland Browns.

However, Braelon Allen and the ground game were strong enough to carry this offense without Breece Hall. Wilson took notice of how Allen capped off this 17-12 victory. Allen polished off the best game of his professional career, running 24 times for 116 yards and a touchdown that put New York up late in the fourth quarter.  Allen has always been a frustrating evaluation, even going back to his days at Wisconsin. While the talent and physical gifts are obvious even to the blind, he never ran as hard north-and-south as someone who is closer to Derrick Henry’s size than all but a handful of backs in the league. This win against the Browns was perfectly engineered for Allen to break out.

Allen will be the bell cow running back until Hall returns from injury. However, with every impressive play Allen makes as a starter, it will become harder for this coaching staff to banish him to a seldom-used reserve role behind Hall. The Jets may not have seen the best of him yet. The Jets could have a very enticing smash-and-dash combination with Hall and Allen, as the former’s pass-catching explosiveness and the latter’s ability to wear down defenses could work in tandem with great effect.

Defense: David Bailey, LB

Over the last few weeks, there was no New York Jets player who had the microscope on them like rookie edge David Bailey. It wasn’t due to the fact that he was playing horrendously; Bailey had some major bright spots in his game, but his ability as a high-end pass rusher was being called into question. In Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns, Bailey established himself as a player worthy of the No. 2 overall pick. With a game script working in his favor, the rookie recorded three sacks on Deshaun Watson and was in the backfield all day.

Per Next Gen Stats, Bailey recorded nine pressures against the Browns on Sunday, tying Jared Verse’s record for most by a rookie dating back to Week 7 of the 2024 season. Verse went on to win Defensive Rookie of the Year. It was even a day to remember in franchise history, as Bailey’s three sacks were the most by a Jets rookie in a single game since Hugh Douglas had three himself in 1995. Bailey is now up to five sacks in the first five games of the season and is really starting to come into his own as a professional pass rusher.

For Glenn, Darren Mougey, and the Jets, it was good to see the franchise’s highest defensive draft pick and the pass rush as a whole have a monster coming-out party in a game the Jets desperately needed to win. Bailey is without a doubt back in Defensive Rookie of the Year conversations after a three-sack outing against Cleveland in Week 5. Have yourself a day, rook.

Special Teams: Trevin Wallace, LB

Trevin Wallace deserves significant praise for his game-changing special teams contribution in the New York Jets 17-12 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. With the Jets trailing 12-10 late in the fourth quarter, a mishandled punt snap created a golden opportunity for New York. Wallace reacted quickly, recovered the loose football at the Browns 23-yard line and immediately put his team in excellent scoring position. In a tightly contested game, his awareness and ability to capitalize on the situation proved invaluable.

The importance of Wallace’s recovery became clear just three plays later, when running back Braelon Allen broke free for a 22-yard touchdown to give the Jets a 17-12 lead. That score ultimately proved decisive, turning Wallace’s effort into one of the most important plays of the afternoon. With time running out and the Jets needing a breakthrough, his recovery provided the spark necessary to change the momentum and put New York in control. Without that crucial turnover, the outcome could have been very different.

What makes Wallace deserving of special recognition is his ability to make an impact when the opportunity arises. Special teams players rarely receive the same attention as quarterbacks or running backs, but their contributions can determine the outcome of close contests. Wallace demonstrated the importance of staying alert, reacting quickly, and executing under pressure. Although Cleveland’s mistake created the opportunity, Wallace deserves credit for securing the football and giving his offense a chance to capitalize. His recovery directly set up the go-ahead touchdown, making him a strong candidate for the Jets most impactful special teams performer against the Browns.
