Two Chicago Cubs free agent pitchers given 50-50 chance of returning in 2027
In a cartoonishly perfect world, the Chicago Cubs would open up the bank book and spend like drunken sailors to scoop up Tarik Skubal and Sonny Gray for the rotation and Adrian Morejon for the bullpen, with a bit reserved for another solid starter.

But this is far from a perfect world and the Cubs will likely spend prudently on free agent pickups while looking for trades and minor league contract players to beef up their diminished pitching corps. They might also work to re-sign pitchers from their 2026 roster, hoping on familiarity and comfort within the Cubs system to help broker a more budget-friendly deal.
Even money on two Cubs starters coming back

More News: Chicago Cubs: Is it time to revisit this rumored trade target?
In a piece published on Yahoo Sports, Joey Pollizze makes the case that two of the team’s eligible free agent pitchers have, in his estimation, a 50-50 chance of returning to the Cubs for 2027 and beyond—Clay Holmes and David Peterson.
Per Pollizze:
“The Cubs and Holmes are really a match made in heaven. Holmes is an extreme groundball pitcher, while Chicago has an elite defense. For a pitcher who ranked in the 99th percentile in groundball rate this past season, there’s appeal for the right-hander to return in 2027.
Now it’ll all depend on what Holmes actually commands in free agency. The 33-year-old is not technically a free agent yet, but the expectation is that he will decline his $12 million player option. That will give him the freedom to sign with any team…
Peterson will command the least amount of money in free agency from this list, which is why there’s a strong possibility that he does return to the team. He’s definitely a pitcher the Cubs should be looking to bring back on a cheap deal.
The former All-Star pitcher had a 3.70 ERA and a 1.369 WHIP across 80 ⅓ innings pitched with the Cubs in the back half of the season. Those numbers should play well in that No. 4 rotation spot next year.”
Chicago is the perfect place for both

Both groundball specialists showed why the Cubs, with their elite infield defense, could be the ideal place for them. However, Peterson—who is viewed as the lesser pitcher of the two—actually outperformed Holmes with a 3.70 ERA through 80.1 innings after coming over from the Mets on June 25. At times, he actually looked brilliant. Holmes, meanwhile, posted a 4.25 ERA after coming to the Cubs via trade deadline deal, also from the Mets. His struggles toward the very end of his regular season run were disappointing for a Cubs team looking to lean on his abilities in the postseason.
Holmes and Peterson, though, are stylistically perfect for this Cubs team. Peterson, especially, seemed to really find a new lease on baseball life in Chicago and under Cubs coaching.
Spotrac values Peterson as a single-season contract player at abut $10 million. They view Holmes as deserving of a two-year, 27.7 million contract. Both are actually reasonable deals for the Cubs and would allow for at least one more big free agent buy while leaving enough to tend to other team needs.
Time will tell how this offseason plays out.
