Will Venable lays out Chicago White Sox’s Game 2 pitching plan vs. Guardians
The Chicago White Sox opened the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians with a 3-0 victory. Manager Will Venable turned to five different pitchers in the win, with Grant Taylor ending things via a four inning save.
In Game 2, Venable will be sticking to using multiple pitchers. He confirmed Anthony Kay will get the start with Sean Burke to follow eventually, via James Fegan of the Chicago Sun-Times.
“We’re going to start with Anthony Kay up front here and we’ll figure it out as we go,” Venable said. “Obviously, we’ll have Sean in a role at some point behind Anthony. Got a number of other guys that’ll be available as well.”

In their two-game sweep of the Houston Astros, the White Sox didn’t have a single pitcher throw more than four innings in a game. Chicago has embraced a new mentality when it comes to how they handle their staff.
And now Venable is prepared to roll that plan out again in Game 2.
Chicago White Sox turn to Anthony Kay, Sean Burke
Kay pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball against the Guardians in Game 1, earning a hold. In Game 2 against the Astros, he earned a win by keeping things scoreless over 2/3 of an inning. While the Game 2 Cleveland clash will mark his first postseason start, he has already made an impact in the series. Over his 33 games during the regular season, including 31 starts, Kay posted a 4.44 ERA and 129/56 K/BB ratio.
Burke started the White Sox’s Game 2 clincher against the Astros, allowing four hits and three runs over four innings, striking out eight. Burke led the White Sox with 172.1 innings pitched, so he should be able to give Chicago a lengthy outing if needed. The right-hander has been a force no matter the situation in 2026, holding a 3.34 ERA and 185/62 K/BB ratio over his 32 games (27 starts).
The White Sox would be in the ALDS driver’s seat should they earn a Game 2 win. Kay and Burke will now play a significant role in Chicago’s destiny.
