Jets vs Raiders Week 9 Recap: New York Falls 38-33
In a hard-fought battle, the New York Jets failed to secure a win, losing to the Las Vegas Raiders 38-33 and falling to 2-6.
Heading into the Jets’ Week 8 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, both teams have struggled recently and are looking to get their season back on track.
The Raiders were on a 4-game losing streak, while the Jets were trying to rebound after a disappointing loss to division rival the Miami Dolphins.
David Bailey was ruled out with a Groin injury, and Breece Hall was ruled out for the fourth consecutive game. While Hall was out, Braelon Allen stepped in again as the starting running back and had a terrific start for the Jets, finishing the first half with 121 rushing yards and showing his bell-cow capabilities. Allen finished with 147 rushing yards on 21 attempts, a rushing TD, and 2 receptions for 6 yards.
A lot of talk surrounds Garrett Wilson and whether the Jets would trade him, as he’s barely seen action in the offense over the past couple of weeks. But the Jets remain firm on not trading him, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that there is “no way” they trade him. He finished the game with 6 receptions on 12 targets for 83 yards, showing he was more involved in the Jets’ offense.
At the start of the 2nd quarter, with the Raiders up 7-6, the Jets made a great drive, with key plays from players across the offense. Isaiah Williams caught an 18-yard TD to give the Jets a 13-7 lead. Geno spread the ball around the whole drive as AD Mitchell made some key catches.
After that, the Jets’ special teams faltered as they surrendered a kickoff-return touchdown to Dylan Laube for 95 yards. The Long Island native scored the NFL’s first kickoff-return touchdown of the season, giving the Raiders the lead back at 14-13.
When the Jets got the ball back, they scored immediately as AD Mitchell caught a 12-yard TD on a 4th-and-1 to take the lead, 20-14, with 6:23 left in the 2nd quarter.
The Raiders offense moved the ball with no problem against the Jets defense, but the Jets stopped a 4th-down tush push attempt by the Raiders with Connor Heyward at QB, giving the Jets good field position with less than four minutes left in the first half. The Jets have struggled to capitalize in the last few minutes of the first half, but this time they managed to control the clock and kick a field goal to take a 23-14 lead at the break.
Brock Bowers’ second touchdown catch of the game shrank the Jets’ lead to 23-21. Brandon Stephens committed a pass interference penalty that gave the Raiders a second chance, and they took advantage of it.
A Braelon Allen 21-yard rushing TD gave the Jets a 30-21 lead in the middle of the 3rd quarter.
After the Raiders answered with a touchdown by Kirk Cousins on a QB sneak to make it 30-28, they forced a three-and-out on the next drive and looked to take the lead. The Raiders would then score off a 2-yard touchdown catch to Jalon Nailor to give them the lead at 35-30 at the beginning of the 4th quarter.
Midway through the 4th quarter, the Jets drove downfield as AD Mitchell made a nice deep-ball catch for 47 yards, setting them up in the red zone at the Raiders’ 13. One issue for the Jets all season has been their inefficiency in the red zone, and it showed as they could only get a field goal, making it 35-33 Raiders with 4:35 left in the 4th quarter.
The Raiders eventually converted on key first downs in the final minutes, with only 27 seconds left, and converted a field goal to take a 38-33 lead.
On the Jets’ last possession, they hoped to make a comeback. After Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn’s unnecessary roughness penalty on a helmet-to-helmet contact hit on Garrett Wilson, the Jets had decent field position inside the 50-yard line. On the next play, Geno Smith, who played most of the day efficiently, threw an interception to Jeremy Chinn to end the game as the Jets fell short again, losing to the Las Vegas Raiders 38-33.
The Jets offense played well throughout the game, but they need to address their inability to convert in the red zone. Geno Smith played well, showing command of the offense and spreading the ball around. The last drive of the game was a head-scratcher: they had two plays to get closer to the end zone, but instead threw deep into the end zone, where it was intercepted.
Braelon Allen keeps proving week in and week out that he can contribute to the Jets’ offense. It’ll be interesting to see how the Jets manage the workload between him and Breece Hall when Hall returns healthy.
AD Mitchell had a career day, catching 7 of 9 targets for 142 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, it was not the best day for the Jets as the Raiders offense went 4 for 4 in the red zone, went 7-for-11 on third downs, and failed to generate a turnover as the defense failed to make crucial stops when needed. If the Jets want to win games, they need to make the big stops for the offense when needed.
The Jets are competitive in the games, but they need to learn to finish and secure the wins. Next week, they travel to Arrowhead Stadium to face the Kansas City Chiefs.
