I’m finishing up my reading of Brent Raynes’ John A. Keel: The Man, The Myths, and The Ongoing Mysteries [2019].
It’s an interesting book about an interesting man.
While I don’t find John Keel fascinating, only interesting, I do find the things that he investigated and some of the people he inter- viewed fascinating.
And what happened to him, in the last years of his life is fascinating.
Many UFO enthusiasts, including a number of notables, think Keel is a summum bonum of ufology.
While John’s life and efforts are grist for a book, he, like many in ufology did not go into that “good night” unscathed; that is, he (like almost everyone in the UFO field, living and dead) has been tainted by opprobria of various kinds: crack pottery, fabricator of stories, and homosexuality, as if that was a bad thing,
No one in the UFO community is or has been unsinged by rebuke or adverse commentary, but that is not a ufological trait. It’s a tendency of human society.
Consider everyone of stature or note, from Adam and Eve, through to Julius Caesar, Jesus, Mohammmed, Leonardo, Kant, Catherine the Great, James Joyce, Einstein, Elon Musk, et al. Everyone!
So, being vilified for something is not unique, and UFOers are not immune to the slings and arrows from others.
But how do we deal or should deal with such inordinately stinking behavior?
Do what I do when it comes to John Keel or those like him (and there are copy cats): Evaluate what he discovered during his “investigations” and his speculations, not his eccentricities or ultimate descent into a seemingly delusional world he thought was a paranormal reality, but which was a scrim of madness, a mental instability or affliction by the “trickster” he thought controlled this world.
UFO people, sad to say, are not fascinating. They are loopy, generally, and what they find or are interested in are equally loopy.
Even the most stable paranormalist I know (and love), Nick Redfern is not immune to loopiness.
His newest book, as talked about with Kevin Randle in Kevin’s latest X-Zone broadcast —
The Alien Book: A Guide to Extraterrestrial Beings on Earth – allows that “some of the creatures we think of as terrestrial, might not be from Earth.” [
kevinrandle.blogspot.com]
That’s loopy, in my book. (And while I usually get Nick’s books for review, I didn’t get this one; he knows I abhor the idea of extraterrestrial visitors.)
See, not unscathed, even those we presume to like.
