Why Philosophy can’t help Ufology

In the current New Yorker [October 14, 2019] is The Eternal Return: Interpreting the legacy of Friedrich Nietzsche by Alex Ross [Page 34 ff.]

Now I know that only Jerry Cornelius will read the piece but those of you willing to seek it online will find all that you need to know about the flaccidity of Philosophy.

Nietzsche is a favorite of mine, not because of his philosophy so much as his written excursions outside it.

Alex Ross provides an overlay of the great man that notes those excursions.

But what you need to know is that Mr. Ross examples why philo- sophy is not geared to help with any explanation of life or life’s many mysteries, UFOs being one.

Those of a philosophical bent today, getting their ideas from Kant, Hegel, et al., have created, by their mental meanderings, a Frankensteinian monster of cogitation.

They, by trying to extrapolate ideas from someone like Nietzsche, building upon and altering such a philosopher’s views, end up forging a creation (creature?) of gargantuan hideousness.

Offering philosophical ideas as essential to thought is a gesture of pathological mindlessness as I noted here a few days ago.

Steven Connor’s Madness of Knowledge explains how and why this is so, and Alex Ross’s New Yorker effort is an erudite primer to such madness as one finds among UFO enthusiasts who beat the bushes with philosophical bromides applied to the flying saucer mystery.

Again, when someone, even one as facile as me, offers up a philosophical answer to UFOs, shut them up or run for your nearest bar and have a shot of scotch whiskey. You’ll need it to get your mind unwrapped from the insane nonsense.
