A One in 1000 Year High Pressure Heat Dome Over PNW & BC Canada

It’s f–king miserable here.

One-third of people in and around Portland, Oregon, don’t have air conditioning in their homes, and two-thirds of people in and around Seattle don’t have it because we might have 2 or 3 days in the 90s at most every year. Less than a quarter of people in and around British Columbia, Canada, have AC at home because it rarely goes much above 80 in that province.

But a weird thing happened (that may be a glimpse of things to come given global warming) and a super high pressure system got stuck first just off-shore and then on-shore and once it hit land, it made this crazy “Omega” shaped thing in the jet stream that just sent our temps screaming into a heat wave that is breaking every heat record we have– for June, for highest high ever and highest low ever, and broke it either 2 or 3 days in a row because it’s all so unprecedented and the weather system is just sitting over us– stuck there!

Our chickens went through all their water (2 waterers) in a single day– that normally lasts almost all week. We’ve been running sprinklers on a couple of our garden areas, but it’s helping birds, bees, frogs, and… bats! We get bats sometimes roosting in the highest eves of our tall house, but a couple came down and found spots on our porches! We left them alone and they flew off when night fell, luckily. But it’s obvious that this heat is stressing out wildlife completely unused to these temperatures. Also, it was just in the 70s a few days ago, so no one and nothing is acclimated yet. I feel so bad for the animals right now.

Mike’s been walking to the state park across the street and hanging out there, since by the water it’s 20 degrees cooler. I’ve been hiding in our “cool room”– the only one with AC. We’ve taken the cats into it as well, since the house got to 80 degrees INSIDE yesterday and 86 today. We have fans blowing the hot air around during the day (windows closed, we’re not retarded) but at night windows open and fans go into them and we do our best to cool things off.

Tomorrow, over 110 degrees is expected here — the American model of weather forecasting said Seattle was supposed to hit 120 degrees!! But no one believes that — the European model says 109, so most forecasters are saying 112 to 116. Here it’s actually hotter than Seattle just 2 miles in one direction (to the north) and cooler than Seattle going 2 miles in another (to the south and not counting the shoreline.) I am predicting that our house will get over 90 degrees inside tomorrow (Monday the 28th.)

INSANE HEAT HERE where we do NOT get heat like this… EVER.
