People are singing protest songs in unison from their balconies, and being ordered by government drones to go back inside.
Shanghai’s 25 million people under lockdown indefinitely. Chinese social media shows some breaking out of lockdown to protest, chanting: “we want freedom”; “why are you starving us?”

“I have lived as an expat in China for more than 5 years. I can assure you it’s full blown authoritarian lockdown. Everyone lives in a “gated community” that can contain anywhere from a few to hundreds of buildings with guards at the entrances even under normal pre-Covid circumstances. All the government has to do is say the word and the gates are closed with everyone inside.
That has happened, and now people are totally reliant on the “community committee” of party members for food and basic necessities. Many are good and have been distributing food in a timely manner. Others have not. Some people are getting food every day or two, others have not been able to get food for close to 20 days. It seems that some committees are taking the rations and selling them. Incompetent committees do not seem to care if food spoils. Some people have gotten one or two distributions of food, but because it was spoiled, nothing was edible.
You can occasionally but rarely get food delivered from delivery grocery apps, but the prices are 5x what they are normally in some cases.
If you test positive or are a “close contact” of someone who tested positive, you will be taken to Covid quarantine. Amenities range from a metal cot with a thin pad and bed side table, to nothing but a metal chair. Some were ok at first, but they are now overcrowded and covered in feces and dirt. Many do not have running water. Lights are left on all the time. No one is getting treatment unless seriously Ill.
If you have a pet and there is no one that will take care of them, they will be left to starve in your home.
Children are taken from their parents if they test positive. Parents could be taken to quarantine leaving a child alone at home. Luckily, due to international pressure this has changed in the last 24 hours, but it seems that this change has only been extended to foreigners living here.
The worst is happening, but It’s not universal. Knowing that you can be taken from your family and thrown into a dirty Covid infested camp is really stressful even when your on the better end of the spectrum.
Most people see that this is not the virus’ doing. Many are more afraid of central quarantine than getting sick with Covid.
Hungary is suffocating from the massive influx of Ukrainian refugees. The country complains that it is on the verge of its own capabilities.
