I took my 13-year-old daughter yesterday to have an X-Ray done on her knee and the technician told me they don’t use lead aprons to shield reproduction organs anymore. I was given a handout to explain why lead shielding to protect reproductive organs from X-Rays is no longer recommended. I told the technician this is totally unacceptable and that if my child is not given a protective lead apron/shield, she will not be getting an X-Ray. Some other nurse/technician came over and practically yelled at me that lead shielding is no longer recommend and that it’s actually detrimental to use lead shielding.

To make a long story short the first technician finally agreed to use a lead apron/shield on my child for the X-Ray. Once I got home, I checked on the internet and apparently it is widespread now not to use lead shielding for X-Rays. Please make people aware that they must insist on getting lead shielding during X-Rays.
