Common Sense in Emergency Preparedness

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Let me start off by saying I am by no means a chicken little running around screaming the sky is falling, nor am I a conspiracy theorist. What I am is a common sense kind of man that pays attention to the world around him.

Why you should prepare

Living through several major disasters has taught me that no matter where you live you should always have at least a basic survival plan to help you through Mother Nature’s common disasters. However, the events of the past 12 years have made me upgrade my preps to a more long term scenario. Anyone paying attention knows that our economy is by far not stable. With so many countries in Europe on the brink of collapse and our current world economy, to not be prepared now is like being in a broken plane without a parachute. I know we have been through a depression before but the issue is that today the majority of the population has no clue on how to fend for themselves. So if we do have an economic collapse or any kind of major event you are going to have a huge part of the population in a desperate situation. Desperate people do desperate things.

How you should prepare

Well this highly depends on your situation and your perceived threat. Regardless of your situation the more self-sufficient you are the better off you will be under any kind of situation. So everyone’s plans should include learning how to be more self-sufficient. This is rapidly becoming a lost art and it is a pity that we depend on the system to take care of what we are no longer able to do, fend for ourselves. If the stores all closed tomorrow would you be able to feed your family?  Indefinitely?

Your next step is to lay out a solid emergency preparedness plan. I do not try to plan for any one disaster, instead I try to prepare for just about anything by making a plan that requires little to no outside help, outside of my family.

I know that a lot of people have this notion that they can just run into the woods and live off the land if the poop hits the fan but I would rethink this plan. The wilderness is not a very pleasant place to live especially long term. I have spent a lot of time in the back country and the wilderness is only a last resort for me. My wilderness bug out location has good shelter, solar electricity, and running water and it is still only a last resort.

In most cases you should stay put and have a system in place where you can take care of yourself without any stores, outside electricity, or other utilities. Have a secondary location where you can go if your stay put plan is not working. Be as portable as possible. If you know someone on a rural farm or ranch, talk with them and make this your backup location.

This is only basic food for thought and requires much more detail. We have helped people in the past set up their plans and most were shocked that it does not require 10’s of thousands of dollars to set up a good solid emergency preparedness plan. We have less than $4000 invested for a family of three and I know we are set way better than most but it’s because most of our expenditures are not on stockpiling, it’s hard to carry a stockpile with you.  If you would like help setting up a common sense plan, then contact us we are more than happy to help.

With what I have seen over the last couple of weeks we are past the point of being able to prepare over time and with all the learning involved if you are not prepared you should hurry.
