We all have our spooky, wifes tales, myths, or wilderness stories. Leave a reply and share yours. We would all love to hear them so that next time we are camping maybe we will have a new great story to tell.  We want to see who has the best story. Thanks Tim

There are hundreds of well known old wives tales that will have campers feeling both scared and heart-warmed. Surrounded by enchanted woodland landscapes, what better place to tell of the old legends and myths that haunt the forests. Here are three great legends and myths that have become camping old wives tales and continue to be told around the fire today.

The Legend of Sasquatch

The legend of Sasquatch, aka Bigfoot, is one that haunts campers to this day. For hundreds of years there have been sightings of this mysterious beast which is said to resemble something between man and ape. It is an ancient tradition

that the legend of Bigfoot be told around the campfire, to remind campers that they are not alone in the woods. Deep in the forest, lurks this illusive beast. So be warned; this creature of the woods may give campers a fright in the night!

With the legend of Bigfoot tracing right back to 1847, this myth has been told on the camping grounds for centuries and as a result has claimed many different names. Known as the famous Bigfoot in the NorthWest of America, Yeti or the Abominable Snowman in the Asian Himalayas and of course the great Sasquatch in Canada, this beast has become a world-wide phenomenon. Said be the tall height of 7 or 8 feet and hairy as can be, Bigfoot is reported to be a nocturnal beast who hunts for his food at night. An inspiration for film characters such as Sully from Monster’s Inc, Bigfoot is an unforgettable camping legend.

Utah’s Bear Lake

An old campfire story, the Bear Lake Monster is one that frightens campers both young and old, especially those camping in Utah. It is believed that this snake like creature swims the lake day and night waiting for innocent victims to gobble up. The Bear Lake is no small creature, at 90 feet long he is a sight to be feared. With a gigantic mouth and small legs that can lift him up onto the land, he is a beast like no other.

A legend that makes campers from around the globe shiver in fear, Utah’s Bear Lake is a story that has been passed through generations. It is said that once upon a time there was an attempted assassination upon the Bear Lake but the bullets didn’t even skim his skin! An invincible and unpredictable mythical creature, this beast is not to be messed with. Reported to be able to swim as fast as a mile in a minute, the Bear Lake’s legend is sure to be one that circles around the campfire for many years to come…

The Baby Blue Ox

A heart-warming story to tell around the campfire, the Baby Blue Ox is a legend of love, which will have campers feeling starry eyed. As the legend reports, it all began in the winter of blue snow, a winter which was so cold that even the snow itself changed colour. Words froze in the air before they were said aloud and the fish all swam as far away as they could get. It was during this winter that a man went walking in the woods and came across a beautiful little baby blue Ox who was stuck in the snow. The kind man decided he’d take the Ox home, care for him and name him Babe the Blue after the cold winter in which he was born.

The second part of the story proceeds to tell how Babe the Blue Ox grew up, grew tall and fell in love with a beautiful Yeller cow, who made him happy as can be. Even through a rough time of illness the two looked after and cared for each other. A delightful and sweet myth, the story of Babe the Blue Ox is sure to pull on camper’s heart strings.

These three camping tales are guaranteed to have campers sitting around the fire, chatting for hours. From telling the stories of frightening legends to heart-warming myths, these tales are a great way to come together and enjoy each other’s company, surrounded by mystical woodland scenery.
