Doomsday Preppers New Season
November 13 starts the new season of Nat Geo’s Doomsday preppers. I went to their site to look over the line up and from what I can see it does not look like the new season will be much different from the last.
Common Disasters
I am not a huge teotwawki prepper but the preps my family does do covers most any scenario, mostly by learning as much self-sufficiency and sustainable living as possible. We have always preached preparedness and truly believe that everyone should have at least basic preps on hand. We have always said that for common disasters you should have not the recommended 3 or 4 days but a minimum of a week and preferably 2 to 3 weeks’ worth of supplies. Hurricane Sandy and the following snow storm is exactly why we make these recommendations.
Social Collapse
Beyond the common disasters and where Doomsday preppers cover, is social collapse. For this we recommend 3 to 6 months’ worth of supplies with heavy doses of self-sufficiency and sustainable living. We realise this is not practical for a large portion of the population that live in the cities. Here we recommend that if you do not have someone in a rural area that you can go to in such an event that you have a year’s supply of well hidden supplies. Remember as we have said before, you cannot stock pile enough ammo to defend 20 years’ worth of food for 20 years.
Doomsday Preppers
We are all for anyone or anything that helps bring awareness to the need for prepping. Be it for common disasters or social collapse. The issue we have with the show is it shows to much of the extreme and leaves a negative image on prepping. I totally understand that sensationalism sells and they probably would have a rather boring show if they just showed the common prepper but I really think they should balance the show. If the show took a more serious stand on the subject then a lot more people would probably take heed and when storms like Sandy come along a lot less people would be in trouble. If you look at the show as just entertainment it would be ok but it makes a lot of people think preppers are crazy and therefor they do not become preppers.
I know there are a lot of opinions out there and this is just mine but I have personally been through too many disasters myself to not take the subject seriously. When I lived in a disaster prone area I always tried to get my neighbors to prep and saw the results when they did not, so I dislike things that may steer people away from it. Anyway this is just my opinion and would love to hear yours. Am I right or just over reacting?
