5 Tips To Avoid Frostbite

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

When the body is exposed to freezing temperatures for long time frames frostbite can occur as body tissues begin to
freeze. Crystals of ice can form inside the tissue, which will prevent the flow of blood in that area. This can result in
damage or death of the tissue. The parts of the body that are most commonly affected by frostbite are fingers, hands,
toes, feet, corneas, cheeks, shins, lips, ears, and the nose. With the right preparations measures being put into place,
frostbite can be avoided. Here are five steps that can help you.

Step 1

If you are going to be outside in freezing or extreme cold weather, then layer up. It will take a minimum of three layers to
begin protecting the body. Clothing material that is designed to keep moisture away from the body should be used in the
first layer. This would be considered thermal underwear and socks. For the second layer a loose fit in a damp resistant
material is important, for example sweatshirts and heavy pants would be acceptable in this case. The third layer should
consist of outerwear that is tightly woven. These items would be gloves, coats, and boots.

Step 2

Research shows that 30% of heat loss from the body happens through the head. Anytime you are going to be in cold
weather for extended periods of time you need to make sure to cover your head. Choose an insulated type of hat that has
ear flaps. It will reduce to loss of heat and help prevent frostbite from occurring. If you cannot find a hat with ear flaps
then you need to find a tuque or toboggan type made from stretchable material such as cotton that will pull down over the
ears to protect them.

Step 3

Wool socks and gloves can provide the most warmth for feet and hands. If you do not have this type of socks or gloves
available then cotton will do fine, you just need to double up. Find a pair of well fitting boots that will cover your ankles.
High boots keep moisture away from your feet when you have to walk through the snow.

Step 4

Continued movement is of vital importance when you are exposed to the cold. Staying in the same position for long
durations of time can actually promote frostbite. Move around every few minutes when possible. This will increase
circulation and will keep the blood flowing throughout the body which is very important key to avoiding frostbite.

Step 5

The consumption of alcohol can increase the body’s susceptibility to the cold and so does smoking cigarettes. So avoid
both of these when in the cold for long periods of time. It is important to know the signs of frostbite. Monitor your body for
painful sensations, reddening of the skin, numbness, white, yellow, or grayish colors, and watch for the skin to become
waxy and unusually firm.
