Freeze Dried VS Dehydrated Food

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Current events and circumstances in America have provoked millions of the country’s residents to return to the practice of storing supplies of food. The events are so unpredictable that each person needs to think and plan wisely, not only for future natural disasters, but for other unexpected mishaps as well.

Some of the challenges include dealing with unanticipated terrorism and sickness, which can blindside the unprepared. This is why food and water reserves are the very things you need to focus on when it comes to stockpiling for survival.

But that’s pretty easy to say. The concern now is how we choose the kind of items we should store.

Freeze Dried Food

These are the easiest and longest-lasting food items made for long-term survival storage. They contain a multitude of ingredients and seasonings that ensures they can last up to at least thirty years of shelf life. Preparation usually involves nothing more than adding in hot water, and it’s ready to eat.

Freeze-dried foods are pre-seasoned, pre-cooked, and pre-mixed with other ingredients, making them the fastest, easiest, and tastiest long-lasting foods available in the market.

This type of food is also considered as a full meal, since it holds multiple items that one would usually find in a complete meal. This also retains the characteristic of the raw food including the flavour components resulting into taste and textures that are approximately close to the original ingredients, when compared to other dry-processed food.

Dehydrated Food

When we talk about the length of time food remains to be consumable, dehydrated food is considerably short-lived when compared to freeze-dried food. This type of food remains fresh only for around twenty years if stored and sealed properly. You will need to make sure that this is left unopened, is stored in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight. You will also need to see that the storage space has a constant temperature, because it doesn’t have any seasoning or additional ingredients. Dehydrated foods also require cooking.

Because dehydrated goods are usually single-ingredient items, one will need to have a pouch of dehydrated fruit, a pouch of rice, or a pouch of macaroni pasta in order to enjoy a full meal. Seasonings or toppings must be added to get the taste just right.

Survival foods, whether freeze dried or dehydrated, are very compact and are more viable than standard canned goods. A lot of online emergency food stores, like the Daily Bread, have been educating people on how to, and what to consider in, stockpiling long-term food sources. So if you want to know more about these food items, just search for them on the net.

There are a few other things to consider when trying to decide between dehydrated foods and freeze-dried foods. Dehydrating food is simply having the water content removed through low heat, modern air drying methods. During dehydration, the product will shrink making it up to 80% less bulky than “wet pack” foods, and 10-15 times lighter in weight. Freeze drying involves removing moisture through a space age freeze blasting method, then “super heating” it to cause all the water to vaporize into steam. This product does not shrink in size and keeps the original volume, thus requiring more storage space.

The decrease in weight and volume during dehydration makes this an easy, space saving product to store. A one year reserve for two adults takes up about as much space as a refrigerator.

One of the problems for me with freeze-dried foods is that I can’t control the seasonings or sodium content. When cooking for my family I like the variety that I can get with dehydrated foods.

Just a little “food” for thought.
