Six Essential Tools For An Outdoor Adventure

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Going on an outdoor adventure, such as a day’s hiking or staying overnight in a tent, can be exhilarating, but also requires a bit of forward planning as to the kinds of things you might need on your trip.  Here are six essential tools worth taking along with you on your next outdoor adventure.

Swiss army knife

The most obvious choice, but important for good reasons, the Swiss army knife is lightweight but serves a multitude of functions, enabling you to cut things using a knife blade or scissors, as well as open cans or cork bottles, or even use as a screwdriver.  There are lots of different types of army knives on the market, but if you go on outdoor adventures on a regular basis, it’s worthwhile going for as good a quality one as you can afford.

A torch

A compact flashlight is a must-have for any overnight camping trip, so that you can see what you’re doing when darkness sets in.  Again, there are lots of different makes and models to choose from, but quality is always a bonus.  Opt for a waterproof one as well, if you can.

Compass

Handy if you’re going hiking in the hills, a compass will guide you in the right direction if you end up getting a bit lost. They are so small and lightweight to carry, that you really can’t argue about taking one away with you.  Don’t forget to take a map with you, as well!

Portable solar charger

If you take outdoor trips seriously but love to bring your gadgets along, too, then you may find a portable solar charger could make life a lot easier for you.  You can get models that you strap onto the back of your backpack, which then charge up as you’re walking about.  The panels will provide enough energy to then charge up your gadgets and mobile devices.  Always take your mobile phone with you on any hiking trips, in case you get into any difficulties.

Fire starter

If your camping trip involves sitting around a fire in the cool of evening, or you just want to be able to light a disposable barbecue, then you’ll need something to get the flames going.  At its simplest, a lighter or box of matches will suffice, but if you want to go one step further then you could get yourself a fire piston.  This tool uses compression and friction to light tinder.

First aid kit

A basic first aid kit is an essential tool for any camping or hiking trip, in case of any unforeseen mishaps that might occur.  Plasters, in particular, are vital for any long-distance hiking as they can help ease the misery of blisters on the feet.  But also include essentials such as painkillers, cotton wool, creams and antiseptics for bites and stings, and tablets for any tummy troubles.  Insects can be a prolific problem when immersed in the outdoors, so avoid any troublesome attacks by including some citronella spray or candles in your kit.  Don’t forget sunscreen either for warmer days.
