What Is Lure Fishing? – Top Tips For Fishing Lures

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Lure fishing, in its most basic form, is the use of an object to attract predatory fish to your line. Lures are simply creations made from wood, plastic and metal, which typically resemble other fish, especially the prey of the fish you are trying to catch. There are 3 different types of lures you should be aware of – you have both “spinners” and “spoons”, which are generally made from metal. These fishing lures will wobble in the water or spin through the water and both will closely mimic the real movement of fish. Finally, you have lures known as “plugs”, which are most commonly made from either plastic or wood. These lures can work in a variety of ways, including along the bottom of a bed of water, in the middle, or even along the surface.

Factors You Should Be Aware of about Lures

You will find that predatory fish, including bass, trout, perch, etc. pay very close attention to detail, in fact it takes a lot to fool them. Therefore, when looking to purchase a plug lure in order to attract these types of fish it will have to closely resemble a real fish. This will include very realistic eyes, the scales will need to resemble the patterns you see on real fish and the lure should have a shiny finish. Once you are actually out on the water there are a number things you can do to improve your chances whilst lure fishing.  However, the main thing you should be aware of is to not stay in one location for too long a period. You should actively search the water, as some predatory fish will like to stay close to the bank, whereas others like to be a little away from the main current of water.

How to Work a Lure

Firstly, it’s important to realise that the whole point in you using a lure is that you are trying to fool a predator into believing it is a real fish. Therefore, avoid using a lure in a mechanical type of way. You should also look for potential hiding places to place your lure, including amongst weeds, under a tree and along the bank. It is important that you move the tip of the rod at regular intervals in order to change the direction in which you are fishing. The following will explain a little more about each individual type of lure.

- Spinners –When you pull a spinner lure through the water you will notice that the metal blade will rotate. The blade will then catch the light, whilst simultaneously sending vibrations through the water, thus making it look and feel like a real fish. Many spinners will also have additional plastic or woollen tassels attached to them.

- Spoons– A spoon lure will wobble through the water and is made from sheet metal. It will usually be brightly decorated in order to attract larger fish to it, via the way it looks and makes its way through the water.

- Plugs – A plug has been specifically designed to make it appear as though a fish is in distress in the water, thus attracting larger fish to it. This is achieved through the way a plug lure both looks and moves in the water and you can use this type of lure in any kind of water.
