Is the "Free" Credit Card Survival Knife For Real? (Video)

You keep seeing these ads for a “free” credit card knife offer all over the internet.  I’ve posted it a few times.  I’ve was a little leery at posting to the friends of the TIn Hat Ranch at first.  I had reports from several fans that they did indeed receive the knife so I gave it a shot.  Not wanting to leave it there I also decided to order one for myself and one for the wife.  I placed my order on  Saturday February 1st and on Monday February the 10th I received an envelope in the mail.

The Knife

They say the knife is free but with the caveat you have to pay $2.95 for shipping and handling.  ”Is the knife worth it?” might be the first question to pop in your head.  A short answer is yes.  It’s three bucks.

Upon receipt of the knife I opened the cellophane packaging.  It is really no thicker than a hefty debit card.  The design is intriguing, more or less like a transformer.  The blade locks into place with a keyed cam.  You turn the cam to free the blade.  Next, fold the plastic handle sections until they wrap around the knife and lock it into place.  the knife is sharp right out of the packaging and to tell you the truth it will never need sharpening.  Why?  Because the only time you are going to use this knife is in emergencies.

Simply put, this knife is a great idea but must be understood in context.  A knife that you keep in your wallet to be used in emergencies.  I carry the Kershaw Skyline in my front pocket almost every waking second of the day.  Every once and a while I forget or I am in a situation where “knives aren’t allowed”.  My wallet?  It is always with me.  Tucking this into your wallet ensures you have some form of protection at all times.  If for some reason it gets confiscated, who cares?  Throw it in the gutter, I’ll go buy another.

The Rest Of The Story

This doesn’t end here.  Why would anyone give anything away for “free”?  Simple, to get you to purchase something else.  Survival Life is no different.  They have an interesting go to market strategy.  Give away a knife for next to nothing to entice you to buy more.  When you click on the link you must watch a few video commercials to receive your knife.  I said I got 2 knives. With one I declined all of the offers, I still got the knife.  With the other, for your sake, I bought in.  The second offer is basically a more substantial OEM’ed knife, a real knife, if you will, along with a number of survival guides.  The cost is $19.99.  Here is the kicker, Survival Life’s ultimate goal is for you to pay them $19.99 per month for which they send you a number of guides and gear.  They say you can cancel at any time.  I am going to take receipt of the guides and the knife and report back.  I am not against a company that is in business to make money.  Survival Life’s marketing tactics are different, but as long as the product they are offering is worth it I don’t see a problem.  The guides and the knife haven’t arrived yet, but stay tuned.  I will post again when they come in.
