If you are out in the wilderness, surviving on your own can be difficult, but if you are prepared, you will be able to make it back to society without much of an issue. Being prepared means that you have practiced your survival skills, and you know what to do if you run out of food, water, or shelter until you can get help or get out of the situation.

Here are eight ways to practice survivalism on a daily basis that can help you:

• Scavenge for Food

Food is one of the most important things when you are out in the wilderness. This includes looking for berries that you can eat, but it also means fishing and hunting to get the protein that your body requires to keep going in a dire situation. If you don’t know these skills, then you can definitely learn how to fish with a piece of string and a branch. Don’t forget that you will need to clean the fish and any animals that you hunt so learning how to flay a fish is important as well.

• Find Water and Purify It

Water is also mandatory for survival, so when you are outside, look for places where the water pools. Would you be able to drink the water from a local stream or pond safely or do you need to boil it first so that you do not become ill while you are in the woods? Remember, diarrhea leads to dehydration, so you need to make sure that the water will not make you ill. If you are unsure, always boil it first.

• Learn to Start a Fire

Starting a fire can be difficult, so the next time you want a fire, try alternative methods of starting it so that you know that you can get a fire started when you need one. You can even use a bit of lint from your dryer and a magnifying glass to create a spark. Each time you make a fire, use a different method.

• Learn to Carve Wood

Carving wood can be a valuable skill to have. You can carve a fishing pole, arrows to hunt with, a spear, or even create a splint if you happen to get injured. Go into your back yard and pick up some limbs that have fallen from a tree. Get a pocket knife, and start carving. If you practice enough, you can even create a bow to go hunting with.

• Improve Your Knot Tying Skills

Tying a knot that is secure may be the only way to get down a cliff safely. You need to practice making knots that can hold your weight so that you can rappel down a waterfall if you need to. You may need to make a knot for a hammock style cot that keeps your body off of the ground at night. Get a length of rope and keep making knots until you perfect it. You can even make a cargo net for your kids to play on.

• Learn to Cook Outdoors

Remember that there are no microwaves in the wilderness, so if you want your food to be cooked, learn how to cook on a stove, a grill, and a simple fire. In the wilderness, you may only have a stick and a fire to cook the squirrel that you just caught, but you will know how to fix it over the fire without burning it or eating it raw.

• Go Orienteering

This is a great activity that you and your friends of family members can take part in so that you can learn to navigate in the wilderness. You will learn to use a map and a compass to figure out where you are and how to get back to civilization. Also, look at the stars at night to learn how to tell which direction is north; you can also use the position of the sun in the morning to know which way is east. If you don’t have a compass, placing a needle in a small puddle will help you determine which way north is as well.

• Go Camping

Camping is a great way to practice a lot of the skills that you will need in the wilderness to survive. If you go camping often, use the opportunity to practice the survival skills that you are looking to perfect.

If you want to practice survivalism so that you are prepared, these tips can help. Most importantly, make sure that you are mentally prepared because a lot of survival is about being able to strategize and cope when things get rough.
