Why Christians And Homesteaders Should Question The Explosive Growth of Data Centers

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The New Towers of Babel

America is being transformed by giant concrete fortresses most citizens never voted for, never approved, and barely understand.

They rise quietly on farmland. They consume enormous amounts of electricity and water. They demand new transmission lines across rural communities. They reshape counties overnight. Politicians call them “progress.” Tech billionaires call them “the future.”

But Christians ought to ask a different question:

Is this wise?

Not profitable.
Not efficient.
Not innovative.

Wise.

Because Scripture repeatedly warns civilizations that become intoxicated with centralized power, technological arrogance, and the illusion that man can build a godlike system apart from moral restraint.

And that is exactly what modern data infrastructure is becoming.

The Church Must Stop Worshiping “Innovation”

When man looks to machines for salvation, he rebuilds the oldest lie in history.

For years, Christians have been conditioned to surrender every cultural debate to the experts.

If “scientists” approve it, Christians are told to sit down.
If corporations profit from it, Christians are expected to adapt.
If government subsidizes it, resistance is labeled “anti-progress.”

But the Bible never commands blind trust in centralized institutions.

In fact, Scripture constantly warns about concentrations of power detached from God’s law.

The Tower of Babel was not merely an architectural project. It was humanity united in rebellion through centralized ambition.

Genesis 11 describes a civilization saying:

“Let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves.”

Notice the spirit behind it.

Centralization.
Uniformity.
Human pride.
Technological ambition… without submission to God.

Sound familiar?

Today’s digital empires promise omniscience through artificial intelligence, surveillance through endless data collection, and control through centralized infrastructure. Massive data centers are the physical cathedrals of this new religion.

And Christians are expected to applaud while the towers go up.

Stewardship Is Biblical — Waste Is Not

Most Americans have no idea how resource-hungry these facilities actually are.

Modern hyperscale data centers consume staggering amounts of electricity. Some facilities use as much power as small cities. Others require millions of gallons of water annually for cooling systems.

This matters.

Because biblical stewardship is not optional.

Psalm 24 declares:

“The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.”

Creation belongs to God, not greedy corporations.

Man was commanded in Genesis to exercise dominion, yes… but dominion is not destruction. Biblical dominion means responsible stewardship under God’s authority.

Yet many communities are watching farmland disappear under sprawling industrial server complexes while residents face increased strain on water systems and electric grids.

Who benefits?

It’s not local families.

Tax incentives are handed to trillion-dollar corporations while ordinary citizens absorb the infrastructure burden. Rural communities are told they must sacrifice their landscapes, resources, and local control so global tech systems can expand endlessly.

Christians should reject the lie that economic growth automatically equals righteousness.

The Bible condemns unjust scales and exploitative systems repeatedly. A society that drains communities for the enrichment of distant corporate powers is not practicing biblical justice.

There Are Legitimate Health Questions… And Christians Should Not Ignore Them

To be clear, not every concern surrounding data centers is fully settled science.

But prudence is a biblical virtue.

And there are legitimate concerns deserving serious long-term study before these facilities multiply unchecked across America.

Some researchers and local residents have raised concerns about prolonged exposure to noise pollution from cooling systems and backup generators. Others point to possible stress-related health impacts from constant low-frequency industrial sound.

There are also ongoing debates surrounding long-term electromagnetic field exposure in heavily industrialized technological environments. While studies remain mixed and conclusions are often contested, dismissing public concern outright is irresponsible.

Christians should remember something modern society has forgotten:

The absence of absolute proof does not justify reckless expansion.

Proverbs repeatedly praises caution and condemns impulsive behavior.

“The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.”

Modern culture says:

“Build first. Study later.”

Biblical wisdom says:

“Count the cost.”

Communities should have the right to demand transparency, independent studies, environmental accountability, and long-term health research before enormous industrial projects are forced into rural areas.

That’s not extremism.

That’s stewardship.

Technology Is Not Neutral

One of the greatest lies of the modern age is the claim that technology is morally neutral.

It is not.

Technology reflects the values of the civilization wielding it.

A hammer can build a home or crush a skull. The tool is shaped by the morality of the user.

Today’s data infrastructure is increasingly tied to systems of surveillance, behavioral manipulation, artificial intelligence control, digital censorship, and dependency.

Christians should pay close attention.

The same server farms powering entertainment also power systems capable of tracking speech, shaping public opinion, monitoring transactions, and filtering truth.

Governments and corporations now possess unprecedented power to monitor populations through digital infrastructure.

Would previous generations of Americans have accepted this without question?

Would Christians who fled tyranny and centralized control have welcomed a society where nearly every communication, purchase, movement, and opinion flows through systems controlled by a handful of corporations?

Probably not.

Yet modern Christians often surrender liberty in exchange for convenience.

Scripture repeatedly warns against dependence on centralized earthly powers.

When societies place ultimate trust in human systems rather than God, tyranny eventually follows.

Rural America Is Becoming a Sacrifice Zone

Here’s the thing: Many data centers are intentionally targeting rural communities.

Why?

Because land is cheaper. Resistance is weaker. Local governments are easier to pressure.

Families who moved to the countryside for peace and independence suddenly find themselves facing massive industrial development, endless construction, increased traffic, utility strain, and constant mechanical noise.

And if residents object?

They are often smeared as anti-business or backward.

But Christians should defend localism because Scripture consistently values decentralized responsibility.

Biblical society emphasized the household, the family, the local community, and the stewardship of inherited land.

Globalism erodes those structures.

Massive centralized infrastructure projects often weaken local authority while increasing dependence on distant systems controlled by elites with no covenantal responsibility to the people affected.

Naboth lost his vineyard because a king coveted what belonged to a family.

Today entire counties are pressured to surrender their character for corporate ambitions disguised as inevitability.

Christians should ask whether this reflects biblical justice or a kind of modern economic feudalism.

Artificial Intelligence Makes This Even More Dangerous

The explosive demand for data centers is being driven largely by artificial intelligence expansion.

And Christians should be deeply cautious here.

Not because all tech or computers are evil.

But because fallen man always seeks godlike power.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly presented as humanity’s salvation:

It will solve labor shortages.
It will write our words.
It will educate our children.
It will make moral decisions.
It will manage economies.
It will replace human judgment.

That is not merely technological development.

That is theological rebellion.

Human beings are made in the image of God. Machines are not.

A civilization eager to replace human responsibility with machine systems is a civilization moving toward dehumanization. Do we really need more and more depersonalization?

In fact, the more society centralizes intelligence, information, and decision-making into giant technological systems, the more vulnerable humanity becomes to manipulation and control.

Scripture warns repeatedly against surrendering authority to idols made by human hands.

Ancient idols were carved from wood and stone.

Modern idols hum with electricity in windowless buildings stretching across the countryside.

Christians Must Recover Courage

The issue is bigger than data centers.

This is ultimately about whether Christians will evaluate culture through Scripture or through corporate marketing campaigns.

The modern world says bigger is always better. Faster is always wiser. The more connected, the more enlightened, right?

The Bible says man’s heart is fallen.

That means every technology must be judged morally, not merely economically.

Christians should not become irrational alarmists. But neither should they become passive consumers incapable of resisting dangerous cultural trends.

Wise citizens should demand:

  • Local control over development decisions
  • Honest environmental and health studies
  • Protection of farmland and water resources
  • Limits on corporate subsidies
  • Transparency regarding energy usage and infrastructure strain
  • Accountability regarding surveillance and AI expansion

Most importantly, Christians must reject the idolatry of technological salvation.

No server farm can redeem mankind.
No artificial intelligence can replace wisdom.
No digital empire can substitute for God’s order.

Civilizations that worship human power eventually collapse under the weight of their own pride.

Babel always falls. Always.

The question is whether Christians will recognize the tower before it is too late.
