5 Tips When Donating Money to Charity

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

You may have been tempted to give money to charity, but stopped because you were not too sure where your money would end up. However, by following some tips for donating money to charity, you can better ensure that your money will be used for good.

Following tragedies like Hurricane Sandy or the school shooting in Connecticut, there are many legitimate groups that need money and other types of support. Unfortunately, there are almost as many fraudulent groups that are just looking to make a quick buck.

Here are five tips to keep in mind when you open your pocketbook, as provided by the Illinois Attorney General:

  • Ask How Much Will Go to Charity. Before you hand over money, ask the organization how much of your donation will go to the charity and how much will go toward “administrative costs.” You may be surprised that even for legitimate charities, a large amount of your donation goes to pay costs that have nothing to do with the charity.
  • Double-Check the Name of the Charity. A lot of fraudulent charities will adopt names that are very similar to the names of legitimate charities to create confusion. Make sure that you’re giving money to the intended organization.
  • Ask Questions About the Charity. If you are not familiar with the organization, ask in-depth questions about the charity, how it helps the targeted group, and exactly how your money will be used. Fraudulent groups may be less likely to provide proper answers or even know what their groups do.
  • Don’t Give Cash. For security and tax purposes, pay by check and write the full name of the charity on the check.
  • Request Written Information. Most reputable charities will have brochures and other written information about the group’s mission and proof that your contribution is tax deductible.
  • Don’t let criminals prevent you from donating to your favorite charity. If you keep certain tips in mind, you can better ensure that your donation will help the charity and not benefit some crook.
