Nevada Child Support Services and Nagaraj Garimalla's Tech Solutions

Operated at the state and county level, Nevada child support services are focused on ensuring the financial well-being of kids after divorce or separation. Whatever their marital status, all parents are legally obligated to support their children until they reach 18 years of age. This age extends to 19 in cases where the children are still attending high school, and up to 21 (or indefinitely) in cases of children with significant disabilities who are unable to self-support.

Parents’ responsibility to provide this support is known as the “child support obligation” and is calculated based on variables such as parents’ respective incomes and custodial arrangements. A parent’s support obligation is calculated with a statutory formula that has number of offspring and gross monthly income (GMI) as a basis.

In cases where one parent maintains primary physical custody over the child, the child support payment has GMI as its sole basis. In cases of joint physical custody, the higher-earning parent’s obligation has the lower-earning parent’s obligation subtracted from it. The higher earning parent is responsible for covering the difference. Such payments are essential in ensuring that the lower-earning (or custodial) parent has enough money for elements of the child’s daily upkeep, such as education, food, clothing, and a place to live.

The Nevada child support process begins with either a parent applying for child support services or a public assistance program referring a case to the local child support office. The office handles tasks such as locating the other parent (using Social Security number and date of birth) and formalizing parentage. The claimed parent can either voluntary acknowledge parentage or undergo genetic testing.

The office then sets the child support order, determining the amount of monthly payment according to child support guidelines. Most commonly, funds are routed directly from the parent’s paycheck to the custodial parent or guardian by the state.

In situations where a parent fails to make a court-ordered child support payment, the state may take actions such as wage garnishment and intercepting IRS refunds. Unemployment or worker’s compensation benefits may be withheld, and credit bureaus may be notified of delinquent payments. Ultimately, the parent may face fines and potentially time in prison.

This process is traditionally cumbersome and slow, as fund transfers and garnishments have to be set up and administered manually. However, Nagaraj Garimalla and the Protech Solutions, Inc., team have designed and implemented a next-generation online system that automates many of the processes associated with Nevada child support payments and collections.

Protech has employed care and integrity in modernizing Nevada’s human services systems, ensuring that gaps between family needs, parent obligations, and child support payments are reduced. Its platform enables authorities to identify and address cases of nonpayment and noncompliance. As a result, the Nevada Child Support Program has achieved federal certification with high marks. During the federal auditing process, the state program yielded just 10 findings, which indicates strong overall program performance in areas such as security and functionality. Nagaraj Garimalla and Protech’s efforts were lauded as having built internal capacity, as the company undertook hands-on job shadowing to understand the specific employee dynamics involved in the services rendered.
