Holidays in Athens - Top 10 things to do for free

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Thanks to Robert it’s time to get to know a little bit about the capital of Greece, Athens. Without more delay here goes Robert’s top 10 things to do for free in the city :)

A holiday to Athens can be the things that dreams are made of. It can also be prohibitively expensive, even as Greece works through the storm of the current economic debacle. Do not let that put you off, though, there is much to see and do in Athens if you know where to look.

Go Hill Climbing – You will need to pay to go up the famous Acropolis and up to the Parthenon, but that isn’t the only hill in Athens. The city sits in a bowl surrounded by numerous hills, all offering spectacular views.

Pireaus Port – While you will pay a king’s ransom to eat in some of the restaurants here, you can walk around the city port to the south of Athens, the biggest in Europe, and take in some beautiful yachts entirely free of charge.

War Museum – Although really it would be nice if you made a donation, Athens’ War Museum is a free day out for those who want to keep it that way.

Monastiraki – Although this is one of Athens’ famed shopping districts, it can be enjoyed for a leisurely walk around and a spot of window shopping if you are not looking to spend. Alternatively, find yourself a pew at one of the many bars and sit and watch the world go by.

Music Museum – Admittedly this is not one for everyone, however if you want to spend a day looking at over 1,200 old instruments spread over a deceptively large three floors, then this is a must for your trip to Athens!

The Beach – Yes, Athens does have a beach, surprised as you may be by that fact. Try Alimos Beach, although it is large and busy, it is large enough for you to find a quiet spot if you want to switch off, gaze out into the ocean, and relax.

Greek Theatre Museum and College – Situated near ruins of an ancient theater, complete with a modern take on an ancient amphitheater, and even comprising replicas of ancient thespians’ dressing rooms, this a great day out in Athens with a difference!

Panathenaic Stadium – Although Greece got with the times for the 2004 Athens Olympics, in 1896 this stadium was used for the first staging of the modern Games. Although much is now modern restoration, it is still a sight to behold.

Plaka – Nowhere in Athens is tourism perhaps better embraced than the shopping district of Plaka. Closed to cars, the charming collection of twisting streets, open fronted stores and bustling tourists will keep you on your toes and alert to truly appreciate the sensory experience being presented to you.

Changing of the Guard – This ceremony, at Syntagma Square, takes its inspiration from the British tradition, with a modern Greek interpretation. The Guard changes every hour at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Once again a thanks to Robert who writes for Touristorama, a site that helps you plan your vacation and holidays in Greece and the Greek islands. Without doubt one of the most beautiful destinations for holidays in Europe.
