Starbucks India Launch Delayed While First Store Is Announced

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The highly anticipated opening of the first Starbucks India stores has hit a roadblock.

According to a joint statement released by Seattle based Starbucks and Tata Group, Starbucks’ Indian partner, the original plan for 50 stores to be open by the end of 2012 doesn’t look likely to happen. Instead, a single store is now planned for opening by the end of October in Mumbai’s Horniman Circle.

Both companies announced the Starbucks India partnership back in January 2012, and laid out a timeline for the initial store openings. Known as Tata Starbucks Ltd., the first stores would be built in Delhi and Mumbai for a September 2012 launch.

The latest statement released by both Starbucks and Tata Group announced the delayed store openings while also giving some new details about the ambitious project. Starbucks also has committed to buy Indian coffee from Tata for sale at outlets in India and abroad while Tata Coffee Ltd. is building a roasting facility in Karnataka which will supply the Starbucks India stores.

No reason was given for the delay. The two companies have invested nearly $80 million in the joint Starbucks India venture.
