Unique Hotels around the World: Swedish Tree Hotel

Let’s face it: fast city life isn’t always the healthiest habitat. After lengthy stints in a busy metropolis, most of us need a solid dose of the great outdoors to keep us firing. When planning our getaways, the destination is everything, though sometimes, it pays to chart your city escape based on accommodation itself.  Enter the Swedish Tree Hotel – one of the most unique hotels on earth, set amongst glorious Swedish Lapland.

Inspired by a 2008 documentary called The Tree Lover, the hotel boasts everything one might need to reunite themselves with nature. Did your childhood dreams consist of living in a full-scale treehouse? Here in Harads, at the Swedish Tree Hotel, it’s possible, all without losing any of those essential modern conveniences!

The Mirrorcube is the possibly the most iconic of all the tree houses at the Swedish Tree Hotel. Clad in reflective glass, the eye-catching invisible structure boasts cozy birch interiors and panoramic views of the surrounding Lule River valley.

A simple sign denotes the track one must take to reach their tree room. The tree is utilized as a symbol – it is innately anchored to the earth, and in visiting the hotel you engage with nature, you see it, hear it and most of all reconnect with it.

Situated less than 75 kilometers outside the Arctic Circle, the eclectic range of suspended cabins at the Swedish Tree Hotel provides unique accommodation; reached via a pleasant stroll through the grassy fields.

An opportunity to disconnect with the city, the property provides solace and isolation without foregoing some of the more essential contemporary amenities. Known as The Cabin, this tree room is compact, yet boasts everything you might need for a cozy and romantic stay.

Each tree room is entered in a different fashion, some with trapdoors, ladders or gently sloping bridges. The Cabin’s entry is a long straight plank that appears to drift off into the wilderness.

Birch fields abound and provide a whimsical ambiance for the tree houses and their occupants.

Say what you will about the Swedes, but never doubt their ability to innovate! If you want to escape completely, The Bird’s Nest is one of the more interesting tree hotel rooms. Camouflaged by its seemingly impenetrable twig cladding, you can easily retreat and disguise yourself here.

Don’t be fooled by the quiet atmosphere, there is still plenty to do when visiting. Day trips can take you to the surrounding wilderness of Swedish Lapland, which is rich in wildlife and spectacular natural wonders.

The Blue Cone is a stark contrast to many of the other three rooms with its bright red façade that sparkles in the sunlight.

Silent, peaceful and incredibly beautiful, the surrounding landscape is a bucket-list item for all wanderlusters!

The Dragonfly is the hotel͛’s largest room and designed to suit a family or two couples comfortably. Kent, the proprietor of the Swedish Tree Hotel, told us proudly that this is where Kate Moss and her family stayed when they visited. Uniquely, the Dragonfly is also suitable as a conference venue with seating for up to 10 individuals.

Finally, The UFO is another neat tree room that appears to float suspended between the surrounding tree trunks. Designed to contrast the natural environment, this structure is modern and cozy, boasting everything you need to live out your childhood dreams!
