Staying Safe While Traveling Abroad

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Traveling abroad can be especially nerve wracking if you are worried all of the time about your safety. However, it doesn’t have to be dangerous and there are some things that you can do in order to remain safe during your time outside of the country. Here are some ways to stay safe while traveling abroad.

STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program)
Those traveling to another country can enroll in this free service. Basically they will enroll their trip with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate that is closest to them and they will receive information about any safety concerns that pertain to the country that they will be traveling too. By enrolling in this program it will allow the U.S. Embassy to contact the traveler if some sort of emergency situation arises such as a natural disaster. They will also help loved ones get into contact with the traveler if there is an emergency.

Know The Location And The Contact Information Of The U.S. Consulate
It’s important to know this information when you are traveling. They can prove to be very useful, especially if you lose your passport or are in need of information about your destination. You can find out the location of the U.S. Consulate that will be nearest to you by visiting USEmbassy.gov.

Purchase Travel Insurance
No matter how much you plan, unexpected situations can happen when you are traveling. You may find yourself sick at your destination or that your luggage was stolen. Both of which instances can be very stressful. Travel insurance can help ease some of the burden. Dependent on the policy you purchase, you may be reimbursed if you need to see a doctor, miss a flight or have to purchase new luggage.

Staying Safe
In some areas, criminals prey on tourists as they tend to make themselves an easy target. You can avoid becoming a victim of crime by staying out of sketchy areas that aren’t very touristy. If you have to go to one of these areas for some reason or another, make sure you don’t go there at night and that you travel with a group as there’s safety in numbers. Don’t wear flashy jewelry and keep excess cash in the hotel safe or hidden in your cruise ship cabin. Never leave your drinks unattended as those wishing to do you harm can put a substance in them. In order to keep your personal information from being compromised, don’t use public wifi.
