Barter wont work, what can you offer a gas station against a few a few gallons, when the guy taking the money does not have the power to barter. Same thing in Wal-mart. Barter will not work on a scale required to maintain any standard of living. If you know history a barter system is very crude and barbaric. It would be impossible to integrate smoothly (though it will definitely exist just like the illegal drug trade exists) into the larger microchip money system. See growing it all yourself is a great idea but most people do not have and to grow it on. They estimate at least 1-2 acres to grow fruits and veg for a person that is not a meat eater.
If you include various animals that need to grave and have feed grown for them as well you are looking at a larger amount of space required. There is lots of land that is not being used to grow food at this time, but the lots where we live are tiny. We could not even grow a complete diet for 1 of us let alone the family. How many people even have a yard? Many live in apartments and condos and the newer houses being built are larger homes but tiny tiny pieces of land.
Many people will have no choice unless they want to starve, when your hungry enough, or your kids are dieing because they have had little to no nourishment then you will gladly do what ever they want to keep them alive. We all would eventually unless you had a large enough piece of land and the people to work it.
Buy local and plant what you can… Protect your water and travel less… This is all that I can say… smile
