Signers of “The Statement” Go Over 800 Signatures

Signers of “A Statement of the Traditional Southern Baptist Understanding of God’s Plan of Salvation” have now gone over 800 persons. That list of signers includes over 250 pastors (representing  small, medium, and large churches in 29 states), 6 former SBC Presidents, 7 state Baptist convention executives, 4 members of the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 committee, over 20 associational Directors of Missions, 5 Baptist seminary and college Presidents, and hundreds of other evangelists, church staff members, and lay ministers.

The amazing thing about this list of signers of this statement is that it is not the creation of a standing organization or a national or regional meeting to “jump start” the signing of the document. It started only in an online list, and has been available for signing only three weeks. Receiving 800 signatures in such a time frame is thus rather remarkable. New signers are coming in day by day, both before and after the SBC annual meeting in New Orleans.

Eric Hankins, the primary author of the document, said, “ I am overwhelmed by the incredible support the Statement has received. I look forward to seeing the signers go beyond 1,000 signatures. I believe these affirmations reveal a deep desire among Baptists for a clear articulation of what they have always believed about salvation. For some time, Baptist Calvinists have enjoyed the benefits of a full-scale explanation of their soteriological perspective. Hopefully, the Statement is opening the way to a fully-orbed explanation of our own.”
