He Put a Song in My Heart

Sometimes, the issues of life tend to garner too much attention. They detract from priorities.

Such was the case this morning. Awakening at 4:30 a.m., my mind began stumbling over a number of matters that were not the most fun to face. Some are huge, and some not-so-much.

Nonetheless, this is how the day began. The nagging continued along with my fretting.

In those moments, I began to hear background music.

Weird.

My brain has a hard time focusing on one thing at a time, much less two. In fact, I think intentionally considering two things simultaneously is impossible.

Anyway, here comes this music. Louder and louder. And then I recognized the tune. When that happened, these lyrics became audible in my head.

My comfort, my shelter,
Tower of refuge and strength;
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship You.

We had sung that song in church yesterday, and here it came echoing back as an answer to what essentially was inconsequential compared to the opportunity to worship — again.

Priorities.

“He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; many will see and fear and will trust in the LORD” Ps 40.3.
