By allowing the United States to deplete its weapon stockpiles, capital, and regional leverage, Beijing has accelerated three of its long-term strategic objectives

The conflict has severely undermined Washington’s primary geopolitical weapon—the dollar. Iran bypassed heavy U.S. financial sanctions by selling heavily discounted crude oil and securing imports using Chinese yuan. Even ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz paid passage tolls in yuan. Global utilization of China’s Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS)—the alternative to the Western SWIFT network—has spiked dramatically as nations seek to fly under the U.S. financial radar. While the war induced a massive global commodities crisis via the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Beijing capitalized on the global energy shock. It used its unmatched market share in electric vehicles, wind, and solar technology to corner global supply chains as dependent nations scrambled for alternatives to oil.

The perception that the Middle East can safely rely on the U.S. for long-term stability has severely fractured. Seeing the strategic dysfunction of the war, a growing coalition of Gulf nations (including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman) has begun hedging their security. Gulf states now account for over 80 percent of China’s defense exports to the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has actively procured Chinese ballistic missiles and combat drones while conducting joint naval exercises with Beijing. Having stored massive strategic energy reserves prior to the war, Chinese firms are now reselling liquefied natural gas (LNG) at a premium to energy-starved U.S. allies like the Philippines, Vietnam, and Australia, heavily expanding its regional leverage.

The conflict has effectively shattered the U.S. military’s foundational objective of being able to wage two simultaneous regional wars. Heavily-used American defense munitions—such as Tomahawk cruise missiles and Patriot/THAAD interceptor systems—have been drawn down to critical thresholds. Experts project that U.S. defense manufacturing will take three to four years to fully replenish these sophisticated weapon stockpiles. This rapid depletion of American deterrence infrastructure gives Beijing a distinct strategic window in the Indo-Pacific, knowing Washington’s focus and resources are thoroughly tied down in the Persian Gulf.

Despite these major wins, economists and regional analysts point out that China is not entirely insulated from the conflict’s blowback. Escalating regional volatility has slashed China’s access to critical fertilizer precursors and industrial chemicals produced in the Gulf. A chaotic, unpredictable Middle East threatens the long-term infrastructure investments of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, forcing Beijing into a complicated balancing act between its partnerships with Iran, Saudi Arabia, and global energy markets.
