THE day in Brisbane city started like any other, rain the major constant on the streets as people made their way to work.
As the morning progressed and the brown Brisbane River kept rising, the vibe of the city centre changed considerably.
What started as people talking at morning tea about maybe leaving work a bit early to avoid traffic delays soon turned into serious decisions to evacuate the city centre.
Then, within 30 minutes it seemed most of the city had decided to call it quits.
Authorities said not to panic, but as the phone services crashed and the river continued to rise people did just that.
‘Im outta here, people are freaking out‘, read one text message from a city worker that got through to me about noon.
Everyone had heard the news that those near the river at West End were being told to move to higher ground.

From vantage points inside high-rise buildings people watched the rush of water coming down the river, carrying with it huge logs, oil drums and large pieces of tin.
By 1pm the river was lapping the edges of South Bank and the surrounding boardwalks.

Most major phone carriers were out, leaving people wondering.
‘‘Brisbane river just broke its banks in the city get home now Emm!!”, was another message I got.
By 3.30pm the city was deserted and buses trundled past empty.
