The Afghan Government on Thursday, February 13th, released 65 detainees that pose a serious security threat to the United States and puts more strain on U.S.-Afghan ties. This decision amidst the International mission in Afghanistan winding down.

Zahir Azimi, a spokesman for The Afghan Defense Ministry said, ”the prisoners had been released from a detention facility near the Afghan capital, Kabul, and would be sent back to their respective home areas throughout Afghanistan. The U.S. embassy in Kabul called it a “deeply regrettable” move that ran counter to a 2012 agreement on detainees. The Embassy gave a statement on a website, “The Afghan government bears all responsibility for the results of it’s decision.”

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a U.S. military official said, “the United States had provided Afghan officials with hundreds of pages of evidence or investigative leads against the prisoners.” He went on to say, “some of the detainees had been linked by fingerprints or other evidence to the production or placement of improvised bombs.”

Last year, the prisoners were sent to Afghan authority as part of the transition of the U.S. and NATO out of Afghanistan. The Taliban ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, when a U.S. led invasion toppled the regime for providing refuge to the Al-Qaeda terrorist group and its former leader Osama bin Laden.

“The Afghan government is examining the fate of another 23 detainees whom the United States maintain, should not be released”, the U.S. official said.

The releasing of the 65 detainees are just another issue that continue to fuel tensions between the United States and Afghan ties. This just short of the Afghanistan presidential elections on April 5th, where Abdullah Abdullah and Dr. Ashraf Ghani as the front-runners, and the planned pullout of most foreign troops by the end of the year.

President Hamid Karzai has been pressured for months by the Obama administration to sign a bilateral security agreement with Washington that would allow some U.S. troops to stay beyond the end of this year.
