Deep below the Ukrainian port city of Odesa lies one of the largest underground labyrinths in the world. The Odesa catacombs date back to the early 1800s when limestone was mined for the city’s grand buildings. Through the years, the vast subterranean maze has served as a Cold War bunker, a World War II refuge for Soviet fighters, and a hideout for smugglers. Today, local explorers are still mapping the vast tunnel system and discovering new insights into the past.

Three Days of Hell – Lost Underground in the Odessa Catacombs
There’s an image that you may been seen that’s been going around for several years. 
-  BACKSTORY - 
The story goes like this…
Masha or Mashenka, depending on the source, was a student visiting Odessa, Ukraine in 2005. 
She was attending a New Years Eve party and afterwards, she and her friends decided to check out the catacombs, drink, and have some fun. 
After a while, they were all tired, so they decided to stay in the catacombs over night and leave in the morning. When they woke up the next morning, they noticed Masha wasn’t with them. 
Apparently, she became separated from her friends, and was unable to find her way back. Her friends weren’t able to locate her and she wasn’t in shouting distance. 
They assumed she’d already gotten out, or would get out on her own soon. Unfortunately, this was not the case. She was later reported missing.
Some believe she was left on purpose. 
What Masha experienced was three days of hell. She also didn’t have any food or water, and the catacombs were freezing cold and dry. 

World’s LONGEST Tunnel System (Odessa Catacombs)
August 11, 2017 / VLOG NO. 73 – We set off to explore the world’s longest tunnel system, the Odessa Catacombs in Ukraine. It’s insane how large this system of labyrinths is—consisting of 3,000 km of tunnels, the Odessa Catacombs are longer than both the Rome and Paris Catacombs combined!!! They were built in the 19th century when Odessa was still being built, and used during WWII by the Soviet partisans against Nazi invaders.
