The problem in Zimbabwe is not politics. It is witchcraft. There are too many witches among us, and their work has left a nation of people who are, in the truest sense, spiritual slaves. Before we can speak of liberation in any political or economic form, we must first speak of a deeper liberation — freedom from spiritual slavery.

Jealousy and envy characterise the majority of our people. These are not small vices to be dismissed as ordinary human weakness. They are the visible fruit of an invisible bondage — a spirit that turns neighbour against neighbour, family against family, and progress against itself. Where jealousy and envy govern the heart of a nation, no amount of policy, no change of government, and no election can undo the damage.

We have grown accustomed to diagnosing Zimbabwe’s suffering purely in political and economic terms — corruption, sanctions, mismanagement, poverty. These are real, but they are symptoms. They are the fruit of a tree whose root lies elsewhere. The oppression we see in our economy and in our politics is a consequence of a prior and deeper oppression: a spiritual one. Until the root is addressed, the fruit will keep returning, no matter how many times it is cut down.

The Core Truth

No revolution can succeed on people who are spiritually oppressed. A people bound in the spirit cannot build a nation in the natural. Every movement for change that ignores this truth will eventually collapse under the weight of the very bondage it failed to confront.

This is why so many of our revolutions — political, economic, even social — have failed to deliver the freedom they promised. We have tried to build new structures on old, spiritually enslaved foundations. We have changed leaders without changing the condition of the heart. We have marched, protested, and voted, yet remained bound, because the chains we carry are not only forged from steel and law — they are forged from spirit.

For the meantime, our first work is not political organising but spiritual liberation. We need deliverance from the spirit of witchcraft, from jealousy, from envy, and from every unseen force that keeps our people fighting one another instead of building together. Only a spiritually free people can carry a political and economic revolution to its rightful end.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.Ephesians 6:12

Zimbabwe will not be free by politics alone. Zimbabwe will be free when her people are free in spirit — free from witchcraft, free from jealousy, free from envy, and free from the fear that keeps one neighbour suspicious of another. That is the revolution that must come first.
