State-Sponsored Violence Against Foreigners: Shangaan Man Beaten in Front of the Police

The case of Ernest Mahlangu in KwaThema exposes how South Africa’s anti-immigrant mobs now operate with police at their side, not against them.

Anti-immigrant violence in South Africa is state-sponsored. It is not the work of a few angry men acting alone while the authorities look away in ignorance. It is violence that unfolds with police standing beside it, escorting it, and in the end, enforcing its outcome. The case of Ernest Mahlangu, a Shangaan man from KwaThema, is testimony to this. It joins numerous other cases that tell the same story.

It happened in Ekuthuleni informal settlement in KwaThema. A mob banged on Mahlangu’s door. When he opened it, they accused him of being a foreigner. They beat him and cursed him in front of his five children. All of this happened in front of the police.

Mahlangu showed them his South African identity document. It did not stop them. They then took his wife of 20 years, Esther Sithole, a Mozambican national, into custody — escorted by the very police who had watched the beating unfold. She has been detained since 30 June 2026. Together, Mahlangu and Sithole have five children. This is naked injustice.

Police followed the mob to protect it, not to protect the private property and human rights of civilians being terrorised by a wicked, belligerent anti-immigrant crowd that has gone mad with impunity. The police were not there as neutral peacekeepers. They were there as an escort.

What this means is simple and terrible: the anti-immigrant mobs are doing the dirty work the South African government wants done. They are helping the state rid the country of foreigners, one door, one family, one beating at a time.

The Question That Cannot Be Avoided

If the government was not sponsoring these abuses, what exactly were the police doing while Ernest Mahlangu was being beaten in front of his own children? Standing guard over a lynching is not neutrality. It is participation.

South Africa is no more a society with humanity and Ubuntu. Something has changed in this country. A nation once defined by its promise of shared dignity now watches as mobs enforce a cruelty the state itself refuses to condemn — and appears content to escort.

We call on every person of conscience, every institution, every government still capable of shame, to protest the abuse of foreigners and citizens alike now happening on a massive scale across South Africa. Lawless and evil people have been emboldened, and they have been emboldened because they know they will not be stopped.

Esther Sithole remains in detention while her husband, a South African citizen, bears the bruises of a mob that answered to no one. Their five children are left to make sense of a country that turned on their mother while the police stood by their father’s beaten body.
