Try not to pay by
credit card – you’ll wind up paying the about 2% service charge a retailer normally pays Visa/Mastercard, etc. to process acredit card transaction. The IRS doesn’t do that for you, so it adds more to what you pay. Plus, if you don’t pay off your credit card bill fast enough, interest charges add up, and you can wind up paying more in interest than your actual tax bill. - File an extension before end of day today. You can get Form 4868 from the IRS. This gives you till Oct. 15 to pay off your taxes. You have to estimate how much you owe, and you’ll still be charged a 0.5% penalty from now until you finally pay. You’re not alone in filing for an extension. The IRS estimates 10 million extensions will be filed in 2010 (about same as in 2009)
- One of biggest mistakes: SIGN THE FORM. People apparently forget to sign their tax forms, they’re not legal documents unless you do. Don’t risk a stupid penalty by forgetting your signature. Date the form too.
