Lies, Omissions And Deception At Damaged Paducah Nuke Plant: Pictures Of Damage To Plant's Cooling Tower

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

by Monica Davis

More questions are cropping up about the tornado damaged nuclear enrichment plant in Paducah, Kentucky. Officials released a statement saying the plant was damaged by Sunday’s tornado, but they have been stingy with information as to exactly what was damaged.

A government spokesman claims he released a bunch of information on Twitter. Now, in this day and age, not everyone reads Twitter. Why was the information released on “social media” instead of through normal channels such as a press release or press conference?

People are both fearful, and suspicious: fearful of what exactly happened and suspicious that the government and contractot are not being entirely truthful.

On the one hand, we have two versions of what happened, then some contradictory information from an industry magazine:

1. Plant officials indicated a tornado may have touched down within the plant perimeter causing damage to some of the plant’s facilities. The plant’s Incident Commander requested activation of the EOC to assist in the response to issues that have occurred when the tornado struck. No injuries were reported at the plant, and there has been no off-site impact from damage that occurred at the plant. Operations are remaining stable.  MOREHERE

2. The Paducah Sun’s version of the facility press release says:

Most of the damage was confined to the exteriors of plant structures. No production systems were affected and all critical safety systems continued to function as intended.

3. Nearly all news outlets covering the Paducah tornado claim the plant stopped enriching uranium earlier this year. However, according to this report, (Emphasis Added) “On 14 November 2013 Russia has shipped the last batch of low-enriched uranium [...] The cargo will be delivered to Baltimore and then to USEC’s Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Kentucky, where the uranium will be used to manufacture fuel for U.S. nuclear power plants.” READ MORE

Now, read really carefully here:

On 14 November 2013 Russia has shipped the last batch of low-enriched uranium under the U.S.-Russian HEU-LEU program (also known as “Megatons to Megawatts”). An official ceremony took place in St. Petersburg, where the containers were loaded on a transport ship. The cargo will be delivered to Baltimore and then to USEC’s Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Kentucky, where the uranium will be used to manufacture fuel for U.S. nuclear power plants.

The HEU-LEU deal, formally known as the Agreement between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Russian Federation Concerning the Disposition of Highly Enriched Uranium Extracted from Nuclear Weapons, was signed in 1993. Under the agreement, first suggested in 1991 by Thomas Neff, Russia has blended down 500 tonnes of HEU from its weapons – an equivalent of about 20,000 weapons. The agreement included a series of transparency measures that allowed the United States and Russia to monitor implementation of the agreement. The first shipment of LEU took place in 1995 (seethe detailed timeline of the program at USEC site). MOREHERE

And now, just to put the icing on this maggoty cake: a picture from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission detaling tornado damage to the plant’s cooling tower.

Don’t worry, be happy. Move along, folks–nothing to see here.

So, what do we have? Lies aboiut when the facility stopped accepting uranium for enrichment. Ommissions about what was damaged. And manipulation of the news cycle by using Twitter instead of traditional press releases.

Move along folks. There is nothing to see here.

The company no longer enriches uranium. The enrichment cascade is shut down! The only work being performed are transfers. Meaning, to put the material from one container to another. Please learn the facts before publishing laughable content.

The news report of the damage was accurate. The worst damage was to the cooling tower pictured. Guess what is in the cooling tower. Water, and all the normal chemicals you would find in your regular water. Some power lines, and building siding were also blown around and damaged. NO PROCESS EQUIPMENT WAS EVEN SCRATCHED!

“the company no longer enriches uranium.” funny, that statement runs contrary to everything i have found. you also write, “please learn the facts..”.
would you please link or explain the facts that you are aware of that support your assertion?
        … seriously interested here.. thanks.

I told you what goes on at the plant. Transfers from one cyl. to another. The enrichment buildings are shut down. I believe I know what happens at the place that may soon lay me off. Listen, I don’t trust the government at all. Most things they tell you are suspicious. USEC is a broker of uranium. Meaning, they are the middle man now, especially since the centrifuge plant continues to be a mess. I live very close to the plant, and would not do so if I thought something dangerous was happening. You will believe what you want. That’s fine. As an insider, I see what happens on a daily basis. Good day.

        • RAINSCRYPT

excellent. i can’t express how great it is for me to learn that you are an insider who sees what happens on a daily basis.
the big question, as has been repeatedly asked, what is going on there? did the plant receive a shipment from russia as reported? if so, when did it arrive? how is it being stored? ..and for what purpose – transfer to another facility at a future date?
also reported: russian monitoring at the site. have you observed this? is TENEX now involved in any way at paducah?
do you have any information regarding future plans or intent concerning this facility?

“you will believe what you want”. false. i believe nothing until i see reasonably adequate confirmation, corroboration and/or documented evidentiary proof.
hence, all the questions, which you seem to be in position to answer. so, will you? please trust the sincerity of my request. if corporate/government sites are disseminating disinformation, i would really like to know what’s what here.

        • eg6ky

I yet again told you what was going on. USEC still recieves material to transfer and re-ship. I have never seen a TENEX person. That isn’t to say there haven’t been any representatives of them at any point. TENEX has no say what happens at the paducah facility. No, I have no knowledge of future plans at the plant. USEC will be out sometime early next year, and it is up to DOE to decided what happens next. If you didn’t decipher from their dealings, DOE despises USEC, and probably just wants them out. I cannot give you any documentation as that would jeopardize not only my job, but probably get me federally prosecuted. (Treason, yada yada yada)

thanks for your reply. where deciphering is concerned, the fact that so many conflicting reports and documents necessitated a frequent “reading between the lines”, (to arrive at a somewhat consistent conclusion to a lot of guesswork), is what served a spike in curiosity.
interesting response.. thanks again for your time.

      • RAINSCRYPT

ah, i had read of the return of the site from USEC to the DoE. so, yes the company states that it had stopped enrichment. originally, i had questioned the activities at the plant given the fact that it was supposed to have been shut down and a clean up initiated.. but, LEU is still being sent there?
what’s interesting is the U.S./ Russia agreement and deals between USEC and TENEX, with LEU being sent to paducah from russia, with monitoring being conducted by russians at the plant. a strange situation given the shut down transition and clean up.. while a whole new shipment of LEU recently is sent there for storage..
        a lot to sort out.

        • muckracker1

YES, it is strange, given the definition of shut down, mothballing, decommissioning. if you are sutting down a f acility, you don’t keep accepting material to process. And, if u have standing agreements to process material, then you can’t shut down the facility w/o legal consequence. why were these agreements not voided if the place was shut down?
We are toldl that the facility doesn’t enrich uranium, but here we go: the American people are told one thing, while a facility does something else–and Americans would rather believe all of this information thT THE GOVERNMENT and contractors are telliing them, rather than do their own research—and yes, that is a stretch. Thanks for being up inquisitive war paint.

        • RAINSCRYPT

muckracker1.. after having spent the past few days going through a pile of documents from multiple corp./govt. entities, DoE, USEC, TENEX, NRC, NNSA… nuclear watchdog sites.. on and on… very interesting scenarios are emerging. hah, and still, my first question is, exactly what is going on at that plant?
but not just that one… heh, anyway, this has been a great pursuit for me so thanks.

        • RAINSCRYPT

obviously this has been of great interest to me.. after reviewing certain documents, reports… things do not add up. i can’t let go of this one yet. too many questions not only about this plant but what is going on at other facilities also, and what it all really means.

        • eg6ky

For the record, no contracts have been awarded for decontamination and clean up. DOE will not release any details of that as of yet. I sure would like to know though, trust me.

    • eg6ky

You clearly state in the article that USEC was the source of the picture of the cooling tower. If they were trying to hide damage, would they publish a picture of it? lol

      • muckracker1

i changed that in the edit.
