Emotional 'Louisiana Flood Adopt a Family' Soars

By Deborah Dupré

A Louisiana Flood Adopt a Family rapid response was launched Tuesday by good Samaritans. It opened another floodgate — one of highly emotional responses. The humanitarian project has become an overnight success. This Facebook social media initiative is already matching families in need with people wanting to help by adopting them. Stories pouring in from survivors and people opening their hearts to them are an ongoing testimony to the goodness of Americans.

“So many people want to help but don’t know how. Well here is your chance,” state the Adopt a Louisiana Family moderators on Facebook. “We are connecting families that want to donate to families in need from the devastating south Louisiana flood of 2016.

Two hundred messages were entered on the page, by both Louisiana Flood survivors in need and people wanting to adopt them. Wednesday, officials admitted one of 16 flood chaos startling truths: The flood death toll is unknown, but thought to be less than Hurricane Katrina caused.

“Thousands of people have lost everything. Please let us know if you want to help and we will connect you with a family that you can “adopt”. If you know of a family in need or if YOU are the family in need, please send in contact information. Let’s do this together.”

These Facebook page moderators are operating under the premise that everyone knows someone affected directly by South Louisiana’s most recent tragedy, and “each of us knows someone living far away who wants to help. “Here’s your chance,” the group says. “Message us your info and we’ll put you in direct contact with a family in need.”

Under “FAMILY IN NEED,” are simple instructions: “If you and/or your family have suffered any loss. Message us your info: family member names, ages, sizes, and anything else you need (i.e. sports activities, school supplies, hobbies, etc). We’ll match you directly to someone who will want to help you and your loved ones get through this.”

Instant Success

The initiative became an instant success the day it began. The message below was among the first by a family needing help.

“One of the first families adopted:” the page announced Thursday. “UPDATE: ADOPTED!”

From Wife:

About husband: He loves God, camouflage, and his jeans. He’s an amazing husband to me his wife of 5 and half years. He’s been out helping rescue people and rebuilding/fixing their homes. He’s also a mechanic by trade and he loves country music and southern cooking. He’s a diabetic. I his wife, am a plus size woman.

I love my God, my family & friends, and to laugh. I also have a passionate for music, singing, reading, and missions. I hate to be writing this email, but me and my husband have overcome immense odds throughout our marriage including the biggest factor of finances, being that both of us come from such poverty stricken families, and loss of loved ones including my mother-in-law. But we committed our marriage to God and got a covenant marriage and made the vow that no matter what it was us & God against the world and that we’d never stop fighting for our marriage.

Over the course of these past 5 years God has blessed us with amazing in-laws that gave us homes until August 3,2016 when we finally raked up enough money for the 1st month rent and utilities deposits to get our 1st place together as husband and wife. We’d just spent $200 on house stuff and groceries on Friday, August 12,2016. And finally our little one bedroom apartment was our little “home.”

Mrs. Brown recounted her living nightmare that began this past weekend.

“Then, we awoke to pounding on our door at 5:30am from a neighbor telling us that we were being flooded in,” she recounts. “As quick as I could jump up and plunge my feet into 2ft. deep water, I was trying to find my only pair of tennis shoes floating around my room. Then I began to look around in dismay as my little ‘home’ being ripped away from me in an instant.

“We lost everything and didn’t even have time to grab an essentials except for our phones and one charger…my husband’s phone suffered water damage and barely works.

“But then as I walked out to get our only vehicle a 1998 Dodge pick up truck I cried more as my husband said that we’d have to leave it and get to higher ground as the water was already over the tires and rising. Words will never express the helplessness and devastation of what the flood did to us, but I trust in the Lord and His promises and thank God for people like y’all.

“The worst part for me was when we returned to document and photograph the wreckage amongst it my husband brought my deceased mother’s Bible soaked and muddy. She had so many notes in it with her handwriting and it was one of the last things I had of hers. Thank y’all again for any and all help. If there’s anything we can do to help or repay in anyway please let us know.”

The next entries on the page demonstrate that Americans’ core goodness is thriving.

Next entry seen Thursday, Aug 18:

Aretha, 54-year-old: size 3 pants, sm shirts

NOTE from DIL: Hi I’m doing this for my in-laws so they live in North Baton Rouge and they lost everything. if we can get any help for them I would appreciate it my father-in-law is also in a wheelchair but his wheelchair is at the house and we can salvage it so I’m also trying to get a wheelchair for him if anybody knows of where I can get a wheelchair thank you. Thank you so much, My husband’s job is underwater and we don’t know when he will be working again and we have 5 kids so any help you get for them is greatly appreciate. Thank you & God bless.

The next entry reads, “ADOPTED!” with another family asking for help, soon followed by someone wanting to “adopt” them:

Heartfelt messages continue on the Adopt a Louisiana Family page, one after another, humble cries for help, compassionate offerings, and “ADOPTED!
