The only thing growing from a garden plot pilot atop a Victoria parkade so far is resentment.
The union for fire first responders with the City of Victoria fired off a response June 17 to a recent decision by council to explore converting 16 Johnson Street Parkade spots into an allotment or community garden.
The Victoria Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 730, takes issue with the plan coming “shortly after” rejecting firefighter parking proposals and eliminating employer-provided parking at the downtown hall. Firefighters work from three stations in Victoria, including the headquarters and emergency operations centre at 1025 Johnson St. that opened in 2023.
“Our members are angry, and they have every right to be,” Local 730 president Josh Montgomery said in a news release. “The city rejected practical solutions because dedicated firefighter parking was deemed an unreasonable use of public assets. Now we’re hearing there is excess parking capacity and that those same assets could be repurposed for garden plots. That contradiction speaks for itself.”
