Switzerland: The Canton of Zurich Wants to Eliminate 150 Allotment Gardens — Gardeners Are Left Out of the Decision

With around 150 garden sheds, this would be nearly impossible to manage without help, says Gmür. He estimates that professionally clearing a single plot could cost between 15,000 and 20,000 francs.
The search for a solution is complicated by contaminants in the soil. Studies conducted by the canton have revealed contamination on parts of the site; as a result, restrictions on use apply to certain parcels. At the same time, the city is evaluating additional sites. Initial discussions are underway with the City of Zurich, which owns the land south of the current garden area.
That’s not enough for the association. It wants to know which alternative sites are actually available, how many affected people can be accommodated there, and who will help with the evacuation and relocation. But Gmür also makes it clear: If a viable solution can be found in time, the association could come to terms with the new Limmat. “Then we’ll look forward to having the ‘Living Limmat’ as a neighbor.”
