Shorter days linked to more dangerous infections

vitamin-d(NaturalHealth365)  Every autumn, the days grow shorter, yet most of us barely notice what that shift means for our health.  As sunlight fades, so does the body’s main source of vitamin D, a nutrient the immune system relies on heavily.

Now, research on more than 444,000 adults suggests that low vitamin D can increase the risk of a dangerous complication of infection.  Fortunately, this is a risk you can address.

Severe deficiency raised the risk of sepsis by more than a quarter

Sepsis happens when the body’s response to an infection spirals out of control and begins damaging the body’s own tissues and organs.  A simple urinary tract infection, a bout of pneumonia, or even an infected cut can set off sepsis, which sadly remains a leading cause of death in hospitals worldwide.  Researchers measured vitamin D in 444,509 UK Biobank adults, then tracked who developed sepsis over about 14 years.

Over that time, 15,452 people developed sepsis.  Compared with people whose vitamin D is greater than 20 ng/mL, those with severe deficiency below 10 ng/mL faced a 28% higher risk.  The study appeared in the journal Critical Care in March 2026.

Low vitamin D also made sepsis more deadly

Sadly, the danger didn’t end with getting sick, since among people who developed sepsis, those with severe deficiency were 14% more likely to die within 28 days.  They were also 10% more likely to die within a year.  In other words, low vitamin D seemed to tilt the odds both before and after infection.

Strikingly, more than half of the participants had vitamin D levels below the cutoff, and about one in eight fell into the severe range.

Your immune system runs on vitamin D

Vitamin D does far more than build strong bones.  Immune cells carry vitamin D receptors, and research suggests the vitamin helps them make natural germ-fighting compounds.  Meanwhile, vitamin D helps keep the immune response balanced, so the body can fight infection without overreacting.

That balancing act matters enormously in sepsis, where an out-of-control immune response causes much of the damage.  Seen this way, healthy vitamin D levels may help the body strike with the right force, at the right time.

Meanwhile, as cold and flu season arrives, that kind of steady immune support becomes especially valuable.

Fall is exactly when levels start to slip

For much of the year, many people make plenty of vitamin D from sunlight on their skin.  Yet in fall and winter, the sun often sits too low for the skin to make much vitamin D.  Add more time indoors, darker skin, older age, or extra body weight, and levels can drop quickly.

Obviously, depending on where you live in the world, your “fall season” may vary – but the results are still the same.  Bottom line, your vitamin D status is important.

Because low vitamin D rarely causes obvious symptoms, many people have no idea their levels have fallen.  That’s why a simple blood test, called a 25-hydroxy vitamin D test, is so useful.  Knowing your number lets you and your practitioner decide how best to keep levels healthy year-round.

Simple ways to keep your vitamin D and immune defenses strong

Ask for a vitamin D blood test as soon as possible.  A 25-hydroxy vitamin D test shows exactly where your levels stand.  Many functional and integrative practitioners consider 50 to 80 ng/mL the optimal range, far above the 20 ng/mL cutoff used in this study.  Testing again in late winter helps you see whether your approach is working.

Get sensible sun whenever you can.  On bright days, spend 15 to 30 minutes outdoors with your arms and face uncovered, avoiding burning.  Midday sun produces the most vitamin D, even in cooler months.  A brisk walk outside also supports mood, sleep, and immune health.

Eat vitamin D-rich foods often.  Wild-caught salmon, sardines, mackerel, and cod liver oil rank among the best natural sources.  Pasture-raised egg yolks and mushrooms exposed to sunlight or ultraviolet light add more.  Because vitamin D is fat-soluble, enjoy these foods with healthy fats like organic olive oil or avocado.

Consider a quality vitamin D supplement, especially in winter.  Many people find a daily vitamin D3 supplement the most reliable way to stay in a healthy range during darker months.  Pairing vitamin D with vitamin K2 and magnesium supports how the body uses and stores vitamin D.  Vitamin C and zinc round out a strong immune foundation, so keep plenty of citrus, peppers, and pumpkin seeds on your menu.

A stronger defense starts long before infection strikes

Most people only think about their immune system once they’re already sick, yet more than half of the adults in this study already fell short on vitamin D.  In fact, they fell below even the very low bar of 20 ng/mL that this study considered sufficient.  So how many of us are walking into winter unprepared?

Fortunately, you can build a strong defense long before the first sniffle arrives.  To start building yours, Jonathan Landsman’s Immune Defense Summit explores natural ways to strengthen your body’s defenses.  So before winter’s darkest days settle in, check your vitamin D, get some sunlight, and give your immune system a head start.
